Oh I see your point Bobbbiez. But this corner wouldn't hold anything that big. I was surprised they put one there myself.
I was talking with one of the UPD I know last night while I was there and he said they can't wait till people start going through our drive-thru.
It exits between the corner and the train track.
They figure that they'll need to put a mini sub-station there just to handle all the accident reports!

Yep Ralph, my same thoughts. Even without the new store, there have always been many serious accidents on the corner of Skyler Street and Oriskany Blvd. Just don't understand the people who plan these things. Nuts!!!! All of them. Hey, even if W.Utica has gone down hill we still eat. There are and have been plenty of sites that could have hold a grocery store. Think maybe our Officials just don't give a damn about W.Utica?

The officials? They don't build grocery stores. You need to plead with someone like chanatrys or one of the big chains to come into the neighborhood. I feel your pain, but there is probably always going to be a more profitiable and better place to build. The sad fact is that most have cars now, and they are building stores in the new commercial areas, not the inner city. I know if ain't fair but it's true.

Yep, I mean Officials. Right now they're negotiating with Slocum Dickson to get them to open up a clinic at the old Melee's site and that comes from the horse's mouth and I don't mean Countrygal's horses. Guess it must be because we in W.Utica don't eat well and we'll need a clinic to nurse us back to health.

Bobbbiez, Before you came into the same scene I was involved in, we were trying to get something to settle in the old Great American on Oneida Street.
A lot of things at the time hinged on Oneida County's "Item Pricing Law". After much petitioning, letter writing, etc. Eannace finally supported the change that would allow stores like Aldi's or something similar to move into the area.
We didn't need Golub to build another Price Chopper there, anything would do.
The building was there already......basically a turn key facility......NADA!!! We had one store there for a bit, but it didn't last a year. When we finally got Dollar General next door to it, it was "OK". When they restructured they shut it down because it was not profitable. They were losing almost $250K a year to shoplifters.
Surprisingly, (not) the very same people that complained there was nothing there and then lauded them for opening next door were the cause of its demise.
The folks that can't afford to go elsewhere will never have anything close. We better all start practicing our foraging skills I guess!

Bobbbiez, is the Foodland still on Court St? Taht is the kind of market that is going to stay in a neighborhood, but it is also the kind of market that is put out of business by the bigger stores. They can't compete with the big markets. I think you will find that most of those living in those neighborhoods go to the big stores for everything except bread and milk and convenience items. My sympathy is with those elderly and homebound that can't get out to the stores.
I would be willing to bet, that the Chanatry family would deliver on a limited and neccessity basis to someone that wanted to inquire. I imagine if you called in with a true need for delivery, one of the employees would deliver an order on the way home, or they at least would put up an order and one of the neighbors could pick it up.
I would not want to take something for granted, but I know the Chanatry family is very accomodating and a locally owned market. Years ago, they delivered when they were downtown. Also Carrock's market delivered, and several other local grocers.
I am afraid the demographics are not going to warrant building a supermarket in the inner city with Aldi's, Walmart, and Chanatrys within easy and short driving distance. The sad fact is that the neighbors would be the only one's to shop there. Nobody would drive into the city from the suburbs or outskirts to shop in the inner city when there are markets on the outskirts.
I feel your pain Bobbbiez, but it is a futile effort I am afraid.

No Clipper, Foodland has been replaced by another Mama/Papa store years ago. There are quite a few of them in W.Utica but their prices are extremely high and their food is not fresh. I personally will not buy anything in those stores. Don't know what you'll be getting. Had some bad experiences with their stuff. You do realize every part of Utica has a major grocery chain in it except W.Utica, so I have a problem buying your reasonings why we don't have one. Doesn't make sense to me.

I understand your thinking sunshine, but the other areas of the city have been able to support a major chain store, but only one in an area. When Topps went in on Mohawk St in East Utica, the Price Chopper moved out. Walmart competes heavily with the Price chopper in N. Utica.
The history has not been good for markets on that side of town. There was several markets in Whitesboro, and Yorkville, and they all failed to survive. Now they have Aldi's. There was a grocery on Champlin Ave years ago, and there was a chicago market in Yorkville where eckards drugs is now. Chicago market on Lafayette street failed and closed. It for some reason doesn't seem to be a profitable venture to have a major store on the West side.
I understand 100% what you are saying kiddo, but look at the history. It isn't bright for grocery stores. I am not against you or against putting a store over there. I just don't see it happening, with the way business is leaving, not coming into, the inner city. I don't know the answer sweetheart. I just don't think it is going to be something that the city "officials" can solve. I don't think Roefaro can find a tenant to occupy a major shopping district or large scale store in West Utica.

Corner, This Thursday is the Grand Opening of the Schuyler St. store. After much ado about nothing and some ribbon cutting, everyone will pile in their respective vehicles and truck on over to East Utica for the groundbreaking on the corner of Mohawk & Eagle for the next D. D.!!! Bobbbiez, I am all over the place right now, but am usually at the Oneida Square store from 8:30 PM till Mid-Night (although the dinning room closes at 10PM). Right now I have been spending an half-hour or so a day at Schuyler, down at King ( on the Square) my usual hours, and then back to Schuyler to do their night bake until we have someone trained. Of course I don't get out of there till around 3 AM. Which is why I am on at this un-Godly hour!!! Lord, I need to get to bed! Night all!!!

I've got just two words for you my friend............. and they're not "Merry Christmas"! I just looked at my calendar and Thursday will be my 11th straight day!! Good Lord! One loses track after a while. I think I'll take a three day weekend next week. I found some pictures of a friends bird on my other board that she had been searching for for a couple years that were buried in a Photobucket account no one knew about, from when the bird was first hatched and raised. I touched them up and threw them on a CD for her as a surprise and she in turn sent us a gift certificate to Ventura's!!! And she lives in California!!! She was enthused I think! So if we can find clothes to wear I thin it will be a nice treat. I'm friggin' tired of cooking anything!
