Well after my appts this morning I came back home to tackle the problem again head on. I ran through some trouble shooting and got no where so then I called HP Tech support. She asked me if my ink was low and I told her I was printing black and that was full but the color cartridges were in the soon to be replaced stage. (My Dell I did not need color to print Black) So we replaced the ink, ran some alignments, scanned the alignment cleaned the printer heads and still my file did not print. She then asked me to go into the advance settings in printer preferences and asked if the print to file was checked (it was) we unchecked that and then I tried a couple of different programs to print from (Excel, Word and Notebook) they all passed the muster. Maybe that was why it kept saving my file instead of printing it (print to file) Not sure exactly what that really means if selected because it does not print. I guess now I'm back in business. I then created a note to myself for future reference. Case Closed.

How the heck did Print To File get checked? That was definitely your problem. When the PC wants to print a file, it consults the printer driver and constructs a file specifically for the your printer. It's different than, e.g., your Word file, in that it more efficiently specifies to the printer exactly the codes it needs to print. You can look at your print driver as a routine that converts "PC language" to a language specifically for your printer..
Once that print file is constructed, it's sent to the printer and printed, UNLESS you send the converted file to your hard drive for later printing. That's what Print To File does. It saves the converted print file on the PC, INSTEAD of sending it to the printer.

Thanks for the explanation on "print to file" the Tech didn't even do that for me. I am not sure how it got checked. I never check something unless I know what checking or unchecking will do. Otherwise I leave it alone.

Glad, you're back up and running, in any event. Don't you wonder about how boring it must have been, leading a quiet worry-free life before computers?

just got a call from my nephew...he was telling me he hates technology....hates that his kids are on their phones...no real talk .... conversations...its computer time ...FB time etc.
Like all good things they all have their downsides. We all need fire, water, air but too much can be harmfull to your health.
