as much as I love the yanks and as much as I like santana, he would have looked silly in pinstripes. The Mets are the perfect fit for Santana.
Santana will now head up a rotation with four pitchers (johan, pedro, maine, and perez) who are all capable of winning 15+ games. Three of them (Johan, pedro, and perez) are premier strikeout pitchers. All five starters posted sub 3.80 ERA's last year. All had winning records.
With the Mets offense, stadium, division, and pitching in the NL...I think Johan can go 27-3 with a 2.60 ERA and 290 K's. The guys is that good.
Keep in mind that since 2003, no pitcher in either league has more wins, a lower ERA, and more Strikeouts. The guy has a rubber arm and the best changeup in baseball.
the only thing that changes that is if the 5 pm deadline comes today and no extension is in place, taking the deal off the table.

i got Johan slated to win 108 games next year.... I wouldnt call Perez a premier anything pitcher... yet....
i am hoping Super Natural rubs off on the rest of the rotation....
the extension will happen, the trade when thru becuase.... Santana pushed the twins to make it.
Thanks Francor.. dont believe jduges, we have been having daily arguments about this trade and he told me every day how there is no way the mets will get him and he will land on the yankees..... bla bla bla bla

don't lie now Los J......I never said the Mets wouldn't get him.... I said the yanks offer was better and it was.....trouble is the yanks pulled that offer off the table. When billy smith , Twins GM called the yanks for their final offer, Cashman said hughes was off the table and the twins went elsewhere.
Why else do you think the mets were able to steal him? Both Boston and the yanks wanted to make sure that neither team got him and when the mets came into play they were content to get him out of the AL.
I hope the deal does go through.
Perez might not be a premier pitcher but he is a premier strikeout pitcher. Only a handful of guys can strikeout 200+ in a season and perez is one of them.

Perez led the league in K's per 9 in 2004 with 10.97 per 9 and was 10th last year in K's in the NL with 174
he was third in the league in hits allowed per nine innings with 7.78 per 9.
The guy is a beast in the making and now you have him pitching as your #4 against other teams #4's and you may see another 20 game winner in your rotation not named Johan.

I hadn't thought about Perez throwing 4th against other #4s but doesn't that only apply in playoff situations? Would it hold true during the regular season and assure him of 20 wins?

it won't assure him of 20 wins....I'm just saying he's talented enough to win 20.
I think 16-18 wins is more likely providing guys like pedro and maine stay healthy and allow perez to throw against other teams #4's.
Yes it applies to the regular season as well as the playoffs.
Santana will be the key as far as playoffs go. he doesn't have a strong postseason record and he'll most likely be throwing 2 games per series.

I would love to have him but long term I like the idea of having a surplus of young pitching. (Kennedy, Hughes, Al Horne, Humberto Sanchez, Joba, among a list of others)
come July we'll be in first and will have no need for him.

are you kidding?? if the yanks made an offer equal to what hte mets made it would have looked like this...
bernie williams and chuck knoblock along with unknown guy #1 and #2...
Gomez will never be anythign more than a jay payton and the pitchers are never going to be any more than #3's or #4's at best.. mets robbed em!

Nah, I never played fantasy anything, actually. I suppose it's because I never learned what's involved. Got a good primer for a novice?
Can I get Catfish Hunter and Goose Gossage?

Actually Frank you can.....there are historical fantasy leagues that use complex algorithims to basically predict a players statistics vs other players over the course of a 162 game season.
So you could take Babe Ruth with your first pick then get Brooks Robinson with the third and pickup Bob Gibson in the third.
It's kinda like stratomatic baseball if you've ever played that board game.

That could be fun. I never heard of straomatic baseball either. Gee, was I brought up in a closet?

No Stratomatic was not a household name. It was a baseball board game, where each team had all the major league players and you rolled dice. Based on the number of the roll you'd look at that number on the batters particular card and it somehow integrated the pitchers card as well.
For instance, say you had the Yankees. Rickey Henderson leading off. He had a lot of singles, walks and doubles on his card. only one roll could produce a HR. so maybe 5 was a line out 9 was a strikeout, etc.
A guy like wade boggs was next to impossible to strike out.
It was a little more complex than I'm making it. I liked it cause I'm a stats guy we used to take teams and play full 162 game seasons.
I don't think they make the game any more but it is much cooler than playing baseball on video games. But nothing beats a solid broom handle, and either handballs or tennis balls and going to a little league field to play homerun derby.
