Instead of cameras on poles, maybe it's time for Utica to consider buying some of these Ravens:

Did you hear the folks at Rome Labs recently bought some Wii game boxes? One of the applications they're playing with is real-time image stabilization. One problem with these little UAVs is the camera is jiggling around so much. But with the speed at which the Wii can move pixels around a screen, they can be adapted for image stabilization and even target acquisition without human intervention.
I know other folks are writing software to watch public spaces and notice unusual activity. For example, if a guy carrying a briefcase sits on a park bench for a few minutes, then walks away leaving his brief case, the system could issue an alarm with no human operator required. Spotting a goof with a spray paint can in his hand would be no problem at all.
Someday, the cops will program a few of these at the start of every shift and launch them, adding extra patrol eyes at very low cost. Unfortunately, the Hellfire missles would cost extra.
