Denise, on the other hand if these three keep up their criminal ways they won't have a life anyways. So better to send them to their death in Afghanistan?? Huh?

Well at least there is something noble in dying for one's country in Afganistan rather than turning to a life of crime.

At least the war in Afghanistan is justifiable. More so than Iraq turned out to be in the long run. However ineffective our efforts have been, we at least had a valid mission there, and still do. Fighting terror keeps terror from our own door. If I have to kick some ass, I would rather take the fight to the enemy and have the bloody mess on their porch than on my own.
Most who are deployed are able to return safely. When one enlists in the military, they are obligated to go and fight if they are called to do so. It is an all volunteer force. If a guy doesn't want to join the fight, he should not join the military. If they are wusses they should simply line up for their job flipping burgers and not put on the uniform to begin with. Those idiots simply give brave soldiers a bad name. Life will be a bitch with their Dishonorable Discharge reflecting their lack of character for the rest of their lives.

I gotta agree with Clipper, when they pulled that stunt, they became deserters, they may be alive but someone had to serve in their place, they may have died, lost their legs or mind in their place, thats not right by any measure.
The best place for them is Leavenworth KS, at least till all of the conflicts we are involved in are wrapped up. Them Dishonorably dischage their asses and toss them to the curb
Most of us joined to get an Income, see the world and fight in wars if they needed us to do that. Very few of us ever joined to die, we just knew when we raised our hands, that was always one of the possible outcomes.
Unfortunately this is nothing new either. Getting marching orders can cause one to become a CO, its almost like an light bulb goes on in their heads. O shit, I didnt sign up for this!
I got news for them, yes they did!

I certainly am not condoning crime. All I'm saying is you get some naive kids who join up and after they find out the way that it is, they do everything possible to get themselves kicked out. Didn't say it was smart thing to do, but it happens quite alot. Add in deployments every other year, and yes, there are kids seriously weighing the option of a little jail time or the finality of death. Again, not saying that committing crime is the way to go, but this is the reality of the situation. It is what it is.

No excuse for the crime. If avoiding deployment was the mission, they simply could have deserted. For gosh sakes, they are only a 1/2 hour drive from the Canadian border. Bill Clinton could have given them directions on how to evade serving in combat.

Agreed. Not a well thought out plan of action. Sometimes we just aren't dealing with the best and the brightest.

If you make it through Basic Training, your legally committed to your sworn oath, they have many opportunities for TDP's (trainee discharge program) while in their primary phase. Once they graduate,it's hard to weed them out before the real test comes, deployment. While few are looking forward to it, most SM's are ready and willing to serve when required. They look and act much like the ones that wont under any circumstances until the Orders get cut, then they run!
I think we need to hold these folks to their commitment or require they return all pay, pay back the hundreds of thousands in training dollars and lock them up until their tour of duty is served one way or another.
