Asking for a password or SSDI usually has to do with a wireless connection on a secured network. At home and at work I've got our networks set up with a WEP so the neighbors can't connect to our signal.

Wep stands for Wired Equivalent Protocol. It is a form of encryption used for wireless networks. Another encryption standard is called WPA.
You don't want your neighbors to jump on your internet connection or access your laptop or PC either.

Yes, because there have been reported cases of other people "stealing" someone's wifi to do bad things, like look for kiddie porn, and the cops tracing the IP back to the person who's service was used. Gotta lock that down like Fort Knox.

WPA is considered by most to be far superior to WEP, I've read. On expert hacker said he could break a WEP in from ten minutes to an hour.

I think I read something on the internet about how to hack WEP and WPA not like I have any need to do that. I can't understand why some people who are so cleaver as to be able to hack into what ever they want and ruin it for everybody are just not banded from the internets. I was talking about that way back with George on Politico.

Alan if you don't pass word protect it is very simple to log onto someone elses signal. You just use what ever lets you in. With my Wify notebook when I bring it to my mom's we use the one the NH has and log in as Public (always at your own risk). When looking for a signal I am amazed at how many show up but then the hosptial is right across the street so there are probably many laptops poping up on NH and hosp networks....but all protected.
