Ours is a "hi lo-hi lo" repetitive siren like sound. I set it off once when we first got it. I came home from bowling and Kathy was in bed. I grabbed the back door and jiggled it without disarming the system, and it went off. Kathy almost wet the bed, and her heart almost stopped, and all the flood lights on the outbuildings and the house came on and stayed on, ROFL. Now I do it when I hit the end of the driveway with the remote on my keyring.

We have both. I would not WANT to shoot anyone, but at my age I am not letting some pond scum dirt bag harm me or Kathy, nor am I going to stand by and let them steal my property. All I can say is that when the motion lights come or the alarm system on the windows, doors and the shop goes off in the house, the perps better be hauling ass, because the next thing they are going to see is a fat old man looking down the sights of a weapon aimed at their sorry ass. We live in a semi rural area, and with the armed knuckleheads that wander the earth these days, and the closest police protection 5 miles away at best, I am not taking any chances. Me, either. Just be careful.

In a sense, My alarm is a 16 YO Terrier Mix that lets us know when anything is happening. Then if I cant figure out what it is, I grab whatever firearm is close and check it out! Nothing has ever happened yet but if it does, I suppose I would call the police after. We don't really have a local PD, just the Sheriffs and an occasional Statey. Since we have 10 times more injuries, accidents and fires than crimes, its good the VFD's respond within ten or so minutes!

Stoney, my initials are small and placed in an inconspicuous location on suggestion of the police. My latest project was to initial the catalytic converter and tailgate, seeing as how they are the latest targets of thieves in this area. The tailgate would have to be disassembled to find the initials where I hid them.
BZ, our alarm goes to ADT and they will send the cops, but as I said before, we are not in the city, so the response might take a while. I never thought I would see the world get to a place where private citizens would have to alarm their homes like a bank in order to protect themselves from increasing criminal activity.
If I am ever able to catch a thief around here I might just mug that SOB and grab enough from his wallet to help pay for my monthly bill to the security service, ROFL.

Considering in most cases the alarm alone is enough to scare away any would be intruders so you should be pretty safe with the slow response time, but if it were me, I'd insist on a good discount on my bill because of that reason.

If all you have is a cane, it's OK. A good solid smack to the side of the knee will drop most anyone, after that you can pummel them to our hearts content.
Too many try and use it to strike to the head with it, most are prepared for that and will take it away from you, and then you're toast. Knees go and will soon follows.

We already get a good price BZ. We pay only about $30 a month and had the system installed a year or so ago for $99 and another $99 for the two outbuildings because the special only included sensor installation for the primary house.
We bought the system after a neighbor had a break-in. We travel and are gone quite a bit, so we wanted something to cover the place when we are away.
You will find that even though the troopers barracks is right up the road, you are in no different situation than we are. If the troopers are out on the road, you may also have to wait for a response from a little ways off, by either the troopers OR the sheriff's department.

Time was when the surest way to get your house robbed is to lock your doors. I guess it's not that way any more.

I don't remember us ever locking our house in Newport. Heck in those days you could drop your car off at a garage for work the next day and leave the keys over the visor.

You can laugh Stoney, but around here they are stealing tailgates off of late model pickups for some strange reason. I have engraved things for years, ever since I had a CB stolen when I lived on James St. in Utica years ago. In the 70's I had a truck cap stolen while I was out in my boat fishing. I had launched my boat from the launch along the canal in South Rome. I came back and the truck cap was gone. Rome police found the cap because it was engraved with my initials on the bottom of one of the side rails. I got the cap back, and the scumbag got 30 days and 5 years probation. Am I obsessed? Probably, but if it helps to find something that is stolen from me, it is worth the effort. I keep a notebook with the serial numbers of everything I own that has one, and of the locations of the engraved initials on those things that don't have serial numbers. I also photograph a lot of my belongings such as guns, power tools, electronics etc. I have a disc of photos of our belongings in my safe deposit box with our insurance policies etc, and a file on my computer in case of fire or whatever, to be used for insurance purposes.
