I was walking down Genesee Street the night the Nut House blew up. Do you remember that scene? People were pocketing rings and watches that blew out of the adjacent jewlery store. Two dead - very sad.

The night The Nut House Blew up? Gotta be a joke there someplace. Sounds like a movie title. I think I vaguely remember the incident.
My mother worked in the court house for many years. She loved downtown. She seemed to know everyone. She'd drag us kids down there every chance she had. I was pretty young for the glory days of Downtown Utica, but I do remember the toy section on the 2nd floor at Woolworth's, the live turtles in the basement floor at Neisner's, and Christmas at the Boston Store.
Once I lost my mother at Berger's Dept Store on Columbia Street. So I walked all the way home to Seymour Ave (in the winter). I couldn't have been more than 5 or 6. If I remember it right, there was no one home when I got there. They were out looking for me. I was smart enough to go to the neighbors. Man, did I get it when Mom & Dad got home!

Two dead - very sad. I remember it happened Oct 1970. Jim Bestany was one of the two that was killed. I went to school with Jim. In 1962 Jim was involved in a 96 car train wreak in which 38 cars piled up toppling a signal bridge that the men were working on in Fonda and Jim was very seriously hurt. Quite a bit of misfortune to have happened to one person by the age of 27 when he was killed.

I always stopped in on Monday nights to see him and chat a bit. Great kid. Greater loss. Horrible tragedy. ps: Have you recoup from our trip to the beach yet? ;D

I think we always simply called it the Market Diner because it was at the entrance to the regional market and was busiest at 3 or 4 in the morning when the market opened. When we walked home to Keyes Rd from UFA, our first coffee stop was Hunt's Point Diner on Charlotte St. and the second stop to get warm was to have coffee at the Wurz Ave diner. I still can picture the guy that ran it, cooking on the flat top, and the big gas fired coffee urns, but can't picture the sign out front or the name.
