Same thing to me. Just a bigger pot hole. They did state it was filled in and repaired before this happened.

I saw the Mayor today. He was with a group of Union people who were picketiing the post office downtown. I guess the Government wants to close one of them down. Why do we need two in Utica? Can't figure that out. The Mayor is not as fat as I thought him to be. From what I heard people say about all he likes to eat I thought he was real fat but he is rather fit looking. Oh, well I must not take what people say as serious.

I would hazard a guess that the downtown branch's existence has something to do with the fact that the dumb asses put the main post office as far from downtown as you can get and still be in the same county. The main post office is about as convenient as bib overalls without a fly.

Actually they were picketing due to the USPS proposal to close the main office in Utica on Pitcher St. All mail would be directed from Syracuse. So when I mail a neighbor a Christmas card, it will go to Syracuse 1st, then be redirected back here.

They are doing that all over. They are looking at moving our sorting operations 15 miles to Johnson City Tn. The same will be true. I will mail a card to the neighbor across the road and it will go to Johnson City, then back to Bristol to be delivered to the mailbox that sits about 50 feet from ours. I don't know about NY State, but here in this area, UPS is already delivering some of the USPS parcel post for them. There are lots of rumors and speculation as to where that might lead also.

'Gotham City'? Oh, my. Somebody has delusions. As for the cuts, it's a start (if they are permanent).

So nothing. I really don't care, but I'm sure all the Postal workers who end up getting laid off, will.
Hence the picketing.

The postal service has been in trouble for years. With the advent of email, telefax machines, UPS, Fedex, DHL, and the internet, there really is little snail mail business left for the post office.

Can't blame me. I always support them and will miss the convenience of having one near by, especially if one gets a certified letter ya have to sign for and you aren't home when delivered. Does that mean I'll have to drive to Syracuse now to pick it up?

I think they are simply moving the processing to Syracuse BZ. They aren't closing the post office completely. I imagine that you will still be able to mail packages and pick up certified mail in Utica.

I have not seen any proposals for closing local post offices just the sorting operation. Our local post offices don't sort outgoing mail, it goes to Pitcher St.
I have a friend who was raised in New York Mills, MN. On a trip to NY she made a stop here so she could have her picture taken in fromt of the NY Mills, NY post office & mail a post card from there. She was quite disappointed when it arrived post marked Utica.

When my nieces were younger( and for certain select few ) I use to send my valentine cards to Loveland, CO to have their postmark from there and they also stamped it with a lttle cupid and a small cute quote.
