This is disgusting, Swimmy. But this crap has been going on for ages around here. Hopefully we're about to finally start cleaning house. It's a culture and the sad part is, they really don't think there's anything wrong with the way they do business. If this is the type of stuff people expected me to "go along" with, then no thanks. Because this stuff happens at every single level of government in Oneida County. Actually it's worse in the county building.

Larry, I don't think you can stop it. That's not a personal assessment, necessarily, although if you were a crackerjack crusading prosecutor with 20 years of solid accomplishment I'd entertain the possibility. But one councilman or legislator against the world ain't gonna do it, I wouldn't think.
What say? (And Welcome Back.)

I particularly noted this: "“I don’t think that there’s an intention of malice to cheat the town out of any money,” Backman said. “The late fees have been paid back, and that won’t happen again.”"
I don't know the guy, but that's a tone deaf and rather stupid statement. Who in the future would vote for a guy who minimizes theft by saying all is OK because they didn't mean it in a bad way and they paid it back when they were caught?

I've known (and liked) Don Backman for a few years. He normally replies when I email him my concerns. I'll ask him the context on the quote.

Yes, please let us know his answer. If he meant what he said, tell him he should be more careful.

Thanks, Dave. you're absolutely right. In no way do I think a single person can save this area, or this country for that matter, from all the corruption. But I do think they can play their role and hopefully, over time, inspire others to join them. If enough people start standing up (which will take time) that accomplished prosecutor (local, state or federal) may feel inspired themselves to take on the cause. But we can't stand down and just accept that we have no other choice. This may sound extremely idealistic, but I still believe in the American dream that one man can at least start a movement. Whoever gets credit for finally cleaning this area up is of absolutely no concern to me. Maybe I'm naive, but I'd rather be naive and idealistic than apathetic and feel hopeless.
Hope all has been well. I look forward to some good discussions. I missed it.

Should be interesting to see fairbrother start to have to pay for her own attorney on this Yes, I can't wait. After Fairbrother's lawsuit is thrown out all heck is going to break loose. On a related issue: when I have more time I will relay an interesting story about what happened to me when I stood up at the New Hartford Town Baord and complained about how they are protecting Fairbrother and how wrong it to take Cathy and Ed to court.

I cannot believe the lengths the paper is going to just to avoid publishing the truth about fairbrother's role in all of this. Audit: Some NYM taxpayers paid for 3 police departmentsNew Hartford needs sound fiscal managerThe paper is so focused on Ms. Elefante's transgressions, which are egregious, but the amount in fines she failed to collect in tax penalties ($4,000 at most) is a pittance by comparison to the MILLIONS fairbrother mismanaged while earning her $60,000 salary and extorting her $72,000 hush money (I mean overtime). And the monies from the property taxes came across fairbrother's desk. You mean to tell me that for the 20 years she was town bookkeeper she never once noticed that tax payments coming in late did not have the added penalties and late fees? How can one legally steal $1,000,000 from the general fund and pay the $1,000,000 to the police fund?! Among her other many failures as a bookkeeper, where is dirty d's outrage over that?! Eerily silent. I don't know about anyone else, but this latest news better explains why ray philo resigned out of the blue!
