I hear that Save-A Lot's meat is imported from Mexico. Now, I don't know if it's true or not, but I'm not about to take a chance to find out. I checked out there store in New Hartford Shopping Center. I was not impressed with gray colored chicken.

Chihuahua.........the other white meat. ;D Excellent with roasted potatoes and roasted asparagus. For roasted aspargus: wash and cut the tough part off. Coat in 1 tablespoon of olive oil add a little salt and pepper. Roast in 350 degree oven for 15 to 20 minutes. Serve with a lemon sauce. It is delicious It may need a little more or less time in oven depending on the thickness of the asparagus. Lemon Sauce 1/2 tsp mustard 1/2 of a lemon ( juice it) 1TBS olive oil wisk all together and drizzle over roasted asparagus. You can do the same for broccoli just all a little garlic powder to the lemon sauce or better yet roast some garlic then add some of the pureed garlic to the lemon sauce

Mmmm. Sounds delish Concerned. I bought asparagus a couple of weeks ago and prepared it much the same as you did. I will have to try it with the lemon sauce. I bought two heads of broccoli yesterday, and I will try that with the lemon sauce. I normally simply steam the broccoli until just tender, yet crisp and green, and then serve it with a little melted butter and a sprinkle of garlic powder and lemon pepper or lemon wedge to squeeze over it. As for Save a Lot meats. I would not be surprised to find Mexican meat in many of the chains stores, not just Save a Lot. I know that SOME of their meats come from a Chicago packing house, as I ran from Chicago to Schenectady with a reefer driver once, when I was hauling cookies to their warehouse from Burlington Iowa. We got chatting on the CB and ran back to NY together because he was driving for Humphrey's out of New Hartford. I bought a pork loin from Save a Lot once when we first moved here. It was HUGE. Huge is not good when buying a cut of meat, haha. It was tough as hell, and probably came from a sausage hog that weighed about 900 lbs and died of old age, hahaha. Their meat is of an inferior grade, no matter where it comes from, but they do well in serving a segment of the public that shops by price and can't afford to do otherwise. Just a thought Ralph. Maybe those "gray chicken legs" come from those Chihuaha's instead of from poultry.

Wow Clipper, it is a small world. Ralph and his wife Lois and my family have been friends for many moons now. In fact, Ralph called me two months ago wanting me to be his Mom's caregiver, but I sadly had to decline cause I want to enjoy my retirement fully now. My son, Mark, also was a driver for Ralph. Geez, I'm the one he always took on his travels around the area in his two seater plane when Lois didn't want to go. We made a lot of trips together in the air. ;D He did sell his trucking firm and it is now relocated. He also retired from being town-supervisor in N. Hartford. Thought Lois was going to kill him when he ran and won that seat. She wouldn't let him run again. She wanted him to retire from everything and she got her way, except he still owns Cherrywood only because he had to repossessed it. I'm sure he'll let that go again with Lois's urging at the drop of a hat if a new buyer shows any interest.

When you say Ralph, are you referring to Ralph Humphreys, bobbbiez?
Also, I miss Oneida County for the culture and the food. I always would get my meats from Hapanowicz, produce from a farmer's market (or Price Choppers where they sold local produce). Can't find any equivalents in Binghamton, though I have not tried hard to find any. Still looking for a good pizza place similar to Franco's Pizza.

Yes Swimmy, I was referring to Ralph and Lois Humphreys. Think ya have a better chance of meeting your maker then finding a place in Binghamton equivalent to Happy's. Mainly because it is a family run business like Pulaski's Meat Mkt and no chain stores can match up to them.

Duh, I knew that. Loosen up a little kiddo. I was teasing ya knowing it's not an easy task to find such great family-operated food mkts as we have here in this area.

I am pretty loosened up. I perceived your post to mean I was trying to find a replacement in Wegmans or Walmart. So I was clarifying. I am sorry you thought I was interpreting your post to mean something differently than why I posted my response.
You'd think that being surrounded by farms, there would be a thriving local meat market like Hapanowicz down here.

Yep, know what you mean. Living in Constable which was nothing but farms I thought the same, but not so. Was very disappointed and that was one of the things I missed greatly when I was away from here. We truly don't realize how many great things this area does offer us, especially in the food department, until it's not available to us elsewhere. I learned that very quickly for the short period of time I had moved away.

I realized that when I went to law school in the mid-west. Talk about culturally bankrupt!

The other thing with meats is the "superficial" coloring they use to make meats look pretty. I do not buy there as it looks abnormal to me. I want real looking meat and see exactly what I am buying. I'm not sure if its the wrappers, lights or dye they use but usually looks bright orangy red. I think Tops here does that. (is there a Tops in Utica)
