Another great show and it's associated theme music that comes to mind is "Wagon Train" starring Ward Bond as the wagonmaster. Then there were the predecessors of Grey's Anatomy and House, Ben Casey and Dr. Kildare. My mother would have missed her own birthday or Christmas dinner if either of those doctor shows was on.

I think jon hit every one of the tv shows that each one of us watched growing up, and every one of those programs always had us laughing, crying, or teaching us some good moral values in our lives. Family, was the highest value, be it in westerns, situation comedies, variety shows, or mysteries, we all could watch together!! Sure we only had maybe 4 or 5 channels to choose from, but they all could have shows that would take us from our dreary lives, to some place of mystery, laughter, and tears. Maynard g. krebs, the original beatnik, great character!! and dobie, always persuing thelma, and sitting by that statue of the thinker, plotting new ways to win her over. As in life, going for the prize, and not realizing it is right in front of us!!

Good memories, and probably good family values as well, but I haven't heard much about 3 shows I used to watch on WKTV (Utica - Channel 13 back then) just before supper... Howdy Doody, The Pinky Lee Show, and the Gabby Hayes Show. This was back in the late 40s when I was just a little tyke.
And yes, boxing was on Friday nights. "The Friday Night Fights Are On The Air..." brought to you by Gillette Blue Blades. How are you fixed for blades? My dad used to watch that as well as "professional" wrestling in the days of Gorgeous George and Argentina Rocca. These guys had more showmanship than we musicians ever did.

Bobbbiez, the fishing show you were talking of on the other thread was hosted by Jack Fredricks. He went to school with my mother back in the 40's. The show was called Jack Fredricks Outdoor Sportsman Show. Jack passed away last year at age 84. I always liked that program

How about those great westerns!! Roy rogers, gene autry, hopalong cassidy, and of course davy crockett.. {every one had a coonskin cap}.. remember the micky mouse club, and the ozzie and harriet show, not to mention, leave it to beaver, and also lucy, jackie gleason, and saturday morning cartoons, deputy dawg, ruff and reddy, mighty mouse, and the jetsons. The variety shows were just that variety, and all great shows. The steve allen show, ed sullivan, perry como, kraft music hall, your show of shows, and also medic, dr. kildare, ben casey, route 66, maverick, and on and on, good quality tv, no T and A , and no vulgarities. Can't bring them back, but the memories are still strong and great to have in today's inane society. I loved the old western's. Had a coon shin cap, cowboy hat with the gun and holster round my waist. Mickey MOuse was another one I loved. Actually I liked all the one's you mentioned

Alan, There certainly were a lot of westerns to choose from. In the movies, on TV and before that even on radio, But also books and magazines and comic books, too. The west did seem to capture the imagination of all of us industrial families. www.westernclippings.com/(From the above site) See how many you recognize.

While I was searching for more old TV stuff, I came across the following site, YoungHollywood, young stars of music, stage and tv by decade. Select the decade at the BOTTOM of the page. Here's the page for the 1950's, for example: www.younghollywoodhof.com/1950.html

Me too! I was just a little guy when it was on. I heard all the older kids talking about it. When I finally saw it, I just thought it SUCKED. It was like watching the Lawrence Welk show for kids. All that stupid singing and dancing. I only was interested in the cartoons and they were very stingy in showing them. I didn't care anything about the serials either - Spin & Marty Etc. I didn't and still don't, like continuing programs. Give me Howdy Doody -silly & fun!
