Dave: No 1 looks like Herbert Hoover and he's too modern, no 2 I like, but we need a photo, no 3 is out for obvious reasons, no 4 - not so much , no 5 looks like Ashley Wilkes on drugs, no 6 had been dead too long, 7 & 8 don't really cut it and no 9 looks like John Muir. I was thinking of a dapper lawerly type, very yale and very articulate, I see him sort of leaning jauntily up against a chair, with some sort of drape in the background, and he is carrying a gold headed cane of malacca wood, the handle of the cane carved into an image of the God Pan. This is a real "Skull and Bones"guy, very dapper and that's what attracted Sarah to him. He wasn't like any of her other beaux in that he was quite esoteric. Remember, opposits do attract.

Jon, where is that? Looks familiar. I believe at the North/West corner of Liberty and Hotel Streets. The buildings are still there.

I can't for the life of me picture in my mind the stretch of Oriskany or Whitesboro Sts where the Arterial and ramp system now lies, other than Abe Nathan's junk yard, and a railroad turntable just east of Schuyler St. Neither can I remember or picture the rest of the factories on Whitesboro St. East of the arterial other than Horrick and Ibbotson and the Central Hotel. I remember the buildings, but not the industry names that were there. I remember Sykes Grocery Store and Pop and Ruth's clothing store. Ruth Wienburg later moved to South Street. Smith Packing on Washington at Whitesboro. T. J. Ruggerio (TJ's Liquor) owned a bunch of slum properties in the area of the Municipal Auditorium

It is actually the NorthEAST corner John. Miers safe and lock is on the Northwest corner and was still there the last I knew.
The tall building in the background is the building that houses apartments and the runners hall of fame isn't it? I came and went from that alley many times making deliveries from Braytons back dock. It is only an alley, but I seem to remember that it had a street name.

That hat wouldn't last long in an open biplane, however. No. 2 is bald, becoming a man of fashion when in his middle age. Nos. 3, 4 and 5 remind me of someone who built it in a cornfield, but no one came. No. 6 looks a bit questionable to me. No. 7 may have just missed his boat, while No.8 may have missed everything life has to offer, except riches. No. 9 was the product of a short-lived trend in the Gay Nineties ... getting embalmed with your eyes open. No. 10 has to be Orsen Wells grandfather. No. 11 was brought to the photo session and propped up in a chair by his mother, shown here showing her attitude. I came across No. 12 when I googled on "gentleman" and got "gentleman's assistant." Certainly at my age, I deserve a .... but Mrs. Dave nixed the idea. And the runners-up appear in No. 13 as they petition Fiona as she draws her perfect dapper gentleman. www.windsweptpress.com/images/dapper group2.jpg[/img]

Dave: I am developing the character as I look at these pictures, but none of them have "spoken" to me yet, not like the photo of Sarah and Mary you found. As you know, there has to some kind of immediacy. John's character is more elusive. I sort of like no 11, the mother, I mean. I think no 9 is good too ( just kidding) as a fatherly type, in Venice in the 14th century. Seriously, can you import Mary's letter to her Grandmother into the OGH workbook, because I am going to write a reply from her Aunt Blandina and I would like them both together. Thanks. You know, I kind of like Mrs Dave. She knows how to say no at the right time.

Here may be your man, complete with cape, cane and the high forehead of studied intelligence (I like to think.) He's actually Fernand Khnopff , the post-impressionism Belgian Symbolist. No, I can't explain that. But I have no need to, because you can get a taste in the following YouTube video. I highly recommend it. It's mesmerising, accompanied by Enya or Enya-like music. Fiona, the last three paintings of a female to appear in the video may be of your ghost. By the way, Mr. Khnopff wasn't a clothes horse, according to Dandyism.net, who said the man "took the Brummellian (or rather Baudelairean) route of sartorial sobriety." No, I can't explain that either. You'll have to go to www.dandyism.net/?p=696But first, a video of Khnopff's eerie art ......

Dave, that video is PERFECT and haunting and explains what I have felt about this project all along - that there is something surreal about it, about the coincidences and switchbacks and ideas that appear out of nowhere and haunt me. Do you think that's it's a good idea to move the video to the workbook? I see Mary and Sarah in every painting and their eyes haunt me too. I like this artist and was somewhat familiar with his work, he is "The Man, " but if we use his image someone may reckognize him I am sure. Can we get in closer to John, but with another picture now that we know what were looking for ?

The last two images are definatley Mary B. This makes me think... I could use my digital camera to take photos of the heads on the building and we could set it to music, I could post it on U tube and we could use it as a lead in for the project. What do you think?

Take a look at this! Thinking of Sarah (bones in the basement), maybe Mary in spots, certainly Mrs. Latcher in the water .....
