And for the record....I don't agree with PETA, but my estimation of you just dropped a long way down!!!!! Stand bye. It could go lower.

I have to agree with you to an extent Dave. If an animal is a pest, and it is interfering with my life, it will be addressed. It is not like there isn't enough barn swallows in the world. They are not endangered. I had wrens building nests in my carport. They were shitting all over our patio furniture, and would attack us when we went there to sit. I found that they were protecting a nest, so however cruel if may be, I took the nest and eggs and dumped them in the garbage can. The last thing I need is 4 more of the little bastards crapping on my $600 patio set, and harassing me when I go there to sit and relax. I love animals, but I am not a fan of pets that are not controlled either. I guess I value my own rights as a property owner, more than I value being a benevolent animal lover. I am not fond of cats, and love dogs, but not one's that run loose and shit in my yard and threaten our poodle in her own territory. I have had incidents where I have used empty threats to convince neighbors to keep their pets home. My most recent was a neighbor who came to borrow my ladder to get HIS cat out of MY tree, where MY dog had chased it. I loaned him my ladder, but I stated an opinion that seems to have gotten across to him. The cat has not been back. I simply told him that the ladder was in the back yard, but that I had a 22 rifle and a seven shot clip behind the kitchen door that would get the cat down quicker. I also told him that the 22 was there for the next time I found the damn cat on the hood of my $32,000 pick up truck, or prancing about on my tonneau cover. I would never shoot someones pet or a domestic animal, but I really get pissed off when I have to suffer for someone elses ignorant irresponsible pet ownership. That same cat sits and looks at our fish in our pond, some of which are worth quite a bit of money. Chasing the cat has almost caused our dog to run into the road. Amazing, the cat has not been around here since. I also had a neighbor that let her dog run at night and shit in my yard. It used to come and whine for our dog to come out and play at like 3 AM. Yeah, a whimpering german shepard at 3 AM on MY porch, making MY dog bark. She finally got the idea, after I woke her up to come and get it twice, and the third time told her that the next time I would deliver it to her, IN A TRASH BAG!!! The dumbass finally got the idea, and kept her damned dog in her own yard, and on a chain at night. I understand Countrygal's love of animals, but I bet her hubby would not object to those that shoot woodchucks that burrow in his fields, or coyotes if they threatened his livestock. It is not like you went our "hunting" for songbirds. You simply eliminated a few pests. I personally think that given a choice, I would leave the mosquito control to the bats, because they are out at night and don't bug me in the carport during the hours that I enjoy the outdoors. I guess that is why WE are at the superior end of the food chain instead of the bottom.

Yes, I'm an animal lover, and right now I'm having a big problem with a skunk. Doesn't mean I'm gonna go out and shoot it. My husband who is a hunter whose known pretty well around Central NY for his hunting skills, couldn't believe someone would admit to shooting barn swallows. He'll fill in a woodchuck hole before he feels he has to shoot it and we do have coyote trouble once in awhile, but he still looks for another way before he resorts to killing them. It just seemed to me Dave didn't try hard enough to find a different solution. Plug up the hole with something stronger than a tarp for one thing! I don't have any use for anyone who brags about killing something for no good reason. It sounds like he enjoyed the whole episode a little too much. It was a story better left untold in my opinion.
Birds will build nests in places they don't belong and sometimes you have to remove it. But that bird is still alive to build another nest someplace else isn't it?!
I understand the need for hunting and that some animals have to be killed for certain reasons. But barn swallows??? If you have an 8 by 10 foot hole in your barn, you're lookin to invite more than barn swallows. Cover up the hole, and you've got a lot less problems with pests.

I can tell ya how to get rid of the skunk country gal. We used to have a skunk problem when I lived on Hinckley lake. My neighbor taught me that skunks can be live trapped, using a live trap, and canned cat food with a raw egg cracked over it. When the skunk is in the trap, you simply hold a blanket up in front of you and walk slowly to the trap without the skunk being able to see you. You lay the blanket slowly over the trap and pick it up and take the skunk somewhere else and release it. Ny neighbor "relocated" about twenty skunks one summer. I laughed because he took them to the other side of the lake and up a dirt road to release them. I bowled with a guy that lived near that dirt road and one night he was bitching because he was having a skunk problem. My neighbor laughed and found a different place to release them, LOL. Many years ago, I made the mistake of killing a skunk with a shotgun, when it was raiding our garbage, and had sprayed our dog. BIGGGG! mistake! It was days before I could get close enough to pick it up with a shovel to get rid of the carcass, and it was weeks before I could get the smell out of the back yard. I must have looked like a fool pouring quarts and quarts of tomato juice and bleach water on the lawn. I actuall killed the grass with bleach. Word to the wise, DON'T SHOOT SKUNKS! THEY REALLY SMELL BAD WHEN YA KILL THEM WITH A SHOTGUN!! A couple of summers ago, I had sweetcorn growing in my garden. When it started to ripen, we started finding stalks bent over and stripped every morning. I thought we had a coon, so I waited until about 10PM one night and went out with the rifle and a flashlight. I shined the flashlight into the corn, and here came a skunk waddling out of the garden and TOWARD ME instead of away. Picture my fat ass running full tilt in the other direction. The answer I came up with for that problem is to buy corn from a local farmer, and not plant what skunks like to eat. LOL Have to support your local farmers ya know. I always like a glass of fresh milk and a side order of fresh veggies with my barbecued BARN SWALLOWS, hahahahaha. (oops, I meant to say chicken)

You're bad!!!! Yes, I'm getting pretty tired of a dug up lawn and waking up in the middle of the night thinking my cat crapped under my bed only to remember we don't have a cat anymore and realizing it's the skunk outside my window that stinks. And this is with my windows closed. I'm thinkin he's got to be relocated elsewhere on the farm!

Countrygal, I had a major problem with skunks last year in my back yard. Called our local Conservation Officer and he told me to splash straight bleach wherever I could near where the skunks would hang around. I did just that and they were gone the very next day. They are not territorial. They hate the smell of bleach and will move on very quickly. ;D Try it. Worked for me.

Why all the chemical pollution Bobbbiez! From one of your other posts on the subject of morning eggs, I would guess all ya would have had to do is take your butt out there after keilbasa and cabbage and drive the poor thing off. He would say "the hell with this, I can't compete with that!"

BEWARE!
It is illegal to transport and release a skunk or squirrel. If you trap them then you have to kill them and bury the carcass per Encon Police.
The blanket just keeps the animal calm. The skunk will not spray if they can't lift their tail. To bait the skunk you can use anything a cat would eat. Keep in mind you may also attract other unwanted critters. The skunk although has a unpleasant smell does kill allot of rodents such as mice, moles and other small critters. They do not come out during the day which makes them a little more tolerable.
Watch out for ASPCA they will determine if you killed the critter in a humane way. If not your in big trouble.
Good luck to all and update yourself on the laws before acting.

I tried to pet a skunk once. I was walking home from work, it was night time, and I thought it was a cat. I ran real fast when I realized it wasn't a cat!

We contacted DEC when we were having the skunk problem. They told us the same thing you are saying Todd. We however wanted simply to get rid of the skunks, and did not want to spend our time killing and digging graves for that damned things, so we took our chances with the trapping and relocating thing. Had I known where the encon officer that refused to help us lived, I might have been tempted to release them all in his front yard, late at night. It was the same guy that told us that the bear we had raiding garbage cans was a "native to the area" and simply to let him alone, even though it was coming close to homes and kids during daylight hours. We eventually were rid of the bear when dogs ran it off, and treed it in the woods near by. It didn't come back. It is too bad that encon doesn't employ dogs that can answer a phone. They would be more attentive to citizen complaints than the asshole we talked to!
