Have you heard about the mileage tax? You'll be taxed for each mile driven. Many states, including New York, are considering this new revenue source. It's to pay for the roads, say officials. They don't mention all the gasoline taxes we cough up each year that are supposed to pay for roads and bridges.
Not to worry, said one commentator today on the news. The GPS technology to measure the miles won't be widespread for ten years. But the fellow who inspects your vehicle each year can, like a meter reader, send the odometer reading to the state, who will cheerfully bill you for your use of "their" roads each year.

Last weekend I decidec to try Google's Chrome browser. It's been out for awhile now and after a few patches I hoped the major bugs were fixed. It has a lot of features I like & has only given me problems on one site, Clippers Corners. I've had at least 3 glitches there.
Only about half my post from last night made it & this morning when I tried to open this thread in Chrome I got a page saying the link was broken. Other threads were ok & this thread is ok with IE except for the missing portion.
Anyway as I was saying before being so rudely interupted by Google:
NYS could install a 900 number at state unemployment offices to charge people who phone in their claims rather than emailing.
The state sales tax could be increased by 1% for people who use cash & 2% for those who write checks.
I'm sure if we all pitch in, NYS can be out of it's budget crisis shortly,

and then back in it again as they increase spending because of the turn around.

I have problems on this board with Opera. I think it might be proboards, not the browsers. However, others evidently have better results. Feature wise, my overall favorite browser is Firefox, but for me it leaks memory and slows down. I'm still playing with Linux/Ubuntu, but can't get it to run on this laptop.

Why not tax people based on there weight. It could be something like property tax, the more you have the more you pay.

You could use dimensional weight like UPS does for large but light packages. That way tall, thin people would not be left out.
Also, small people should pay a societal health tax for making large people obsess about their body self-image.

How about a 50/50 Rule? If you're under 50 inches tall or over 50 years we take care of you. If you're over 50 inches tall and under 50 years of age, you take care of us.

How about we fix it so that all the branches of the state legislature no longer have the ability to vote themselves a raise?
Or better yet, they can legislate themselves a 3-5% pay cut for the coming fiscal year to help cut back on costs?

Careful, Ralph. The legislature is more likely to impose a tax on uttering the words "pay cut" when associated with them.

In that case, for every politician convicted of a crime, that convicted politician must forfeit two years salary. For every politician taking unfair advantage of his position as a public official, that politician must pay the tax burden of all his constituents. For every tax break given to friends and family, those politicians are personally liable for any failures and to cover double the tax liability their friends and family members no longer have.

snickers, you SHOULD be uneasy. The title of this thread is a quote from our state legiscritter, Roanne Destito.

I have a theory about why bad leaders continue to get re-elected -- name recognition.
People like to feel like they're smart. Nobody likes to be a dummy. So when they walk into that voting booth and close the curtain, they scan the ballot and see names that they recognize. Voting for someone you never heard of before would be dumb, right? So they vote for the names that sound familiar and walk out of the booth feeling really smart.
