Clipper, the common thread for all you mentioned is simply better safety training programs and putting the most experienced and qualified people behind all. Whether in the sky, in the water, on land or in building solid safe structures one would hope only an experienced, qualified, competent person is in charge. That would be the common thread I see for all to avoid any further tragedies from possibly taking place.

Passive sonar can pick up other sounds apart from sonar pinging but that is beside the point, being as both of these boats were boomers, although boomers most likely do excercise their ability to evade other subs. Two boomers? Probably not as likely. But irregardless, even passive sonar should have detected the close proximity of the other boat if they were both in motion.
Yes it is possible that they did not detect each other. But I guess I will simply bow out if the topic is being described as a diatribe, by my questioning my bobbbiez's wording that left me confused. Clarification is all I was looking for there. Now I am confused by the diatribe comment.
I was a brown water sailor and a tin can sailor, so my knowledge of sonar is limited to what I learned as an operator of the variable depth sonar that I went to school on, while stationed aboard a destroyer out of Long Beach. Sonarmen maintained the transducer, and we as gunnersmates, actually lowered and controlled (swam)the fish while it was in the water.

"Now I am confused by the diatribe comment."
Sorry for the confusion Clip, I was referring to my rambling on. I never would refer to anyone else by saying that. I love our conversations here and look forward to learning from you all.
Again, sorry for the miscommunication. I was referring to MY diatribe.
