From the 01,26,09 issue of the National Review: (This Week) "Get used to it. Jihadist demonstrators in Jakarta, enraged (this minute) by Israel’s invasion of Gaza, waved a poster of Obama, with symbolic bullet holes in his forehead. When George W. Bush gave a press conference in Baghdad last month, an Iraqi zealot threw his shoes at him. This was the culmination of years of the demonization of Bush by Islamists and Muslim totalitarians (the shoe is a degrading item in the Middle Eastern wardrobe). Bush’s many critics here tend to assume that he brought such hatred on himself by a variety of mistakes. They are wrong. Our enemies in the Muslim world hate us, liberals and conservatives, Democrats and Republicans, because we are Americans: because our women are free, our Jews aren’t killed, and our public speech doesn’t have to square with some mullah’s reading of the Koran. They will hate President Obama as much as they hated his predecessor. We shall greet their new hatred with the contempt that all of us should have shown for their current brand." nrd.nationalreview.com/article/?q=MDg2MTAwMjEyZjllNTBkNjkzNjA1NDA4NTA5MjJlYjA=

It's unfortunate (and more than a little disturbing) that there are so many naive individuals in the U.S. and the world. The concept of true good and true evil left us about the same time we stopped believing in Hell as a real place and began believing in relativism. There is a difference between understanding that different people and cultures look at situations from different perspectives and buying into the idea that everyone is right. What we consider "good" is diametrically opposed to what most of the middle-east considers "good" or "right". The best example I can give is the defense used at Nuremburg (for those that are old enough to remember). When Generals, Colonels and other leaders of the Third Reich would take the stand in their own defense they would proudly say that they were just good Nazi's, following the orders of their superiors without question. I equate the blind obedience of the Nazi's to the blind adherence to radical Islam by many that consider us the bad guys. The Western individuals that deny or defend the position of radical Islam either don't have an understanding of history or have decided to ignore the realities of it. After President Obama is sworn into office he will be treated as any other Western leader by the radicals. He will be treated as the leader of everything they hate. Just because he may want to sit around the table, hold hands and sing Kumbaya it doesn't mean they will. He and his supporters will have a rude awakening, but it may take 3, 4, 10 outright snubs or insults before they begin to realize that it wasn't Mr Bush's arrogance or the fact that he didn't back down to international pressure, the hatred is simply because he (and we) exist.

Well said, Dan. However, I don't think Obama plans to charm them. He must realize these people are dangerous. My fear is that he will play to elements in the U.S. who may believe it. I volunteer with a person who is convinced that George Bush destroyed our standing in the world. "Among who?," I ask. The French? The Germans? The Jihadists? Who cares?

Hatred grew out of the result of original sin. It is this one act of defience toward God that effects all of creation. Adam and Eve ate of the forbidden fruit because they, through Satan, wanted to be like God. The tree of Good and Evil became internalized in all of creation as soon as Adam and Eve ate. That simple story of creation proves that even though mankind has been given free will so many chose to do evil in all its forms.( Don't get into evolution when reading this because this is a Theological and Philosphical concept)

Hatred in the middle east also grew out of a severe lack of resources, until they discovered oil. The only way to move upward in that part of the world was to take something from your neighbor, be it the fellow next door or another country just over the sand dune. It's how the Jews moved into Caanaan and it's how Islam spread. As gentlemanly as some in the mid east might be, their culture is based on violence. I suppose ours is, too, but we have a somewhat longer history of getting along with each other.

Someone please explain to me where all this hatred grew out of. Much of the hatred for western civilization developed with the west's devotion to protecting Israel. But the most recent hatred and contempt for the U.S. began after the U.S. pulled its support from the Afghan rebel army and cut Osama bin Laden loose. We betrayed an entire country and left them for the slaughter because we caved to political pressure from Democrats who thought we should not be nettling in foreign affairs. The fear was that we already lost Vietnam, there was no need to risk world war three over Afghanistan, and suffer another stinging defeat like in Vietnam. That's were the real hatred began. Terror cells sprang out all over the middle east. President Clinton exacerbated the situation by refusing to do anything about it, other than launch a couple missiles into Sudan and Chad in retaliation for the embassy bombings in Nigeria. Many forget that after those surprise missile attacks, clinton declared a war on terror -- long before President Bush even announced his candidacy. Clinton's critics said that this war on terror was merely a tactic to avoid or prolong delay to his impeachment hearings. But it started then and progressed to 9/11. That's where all the hatred comes from. Near as I can tell.
