Where exactly is the building? On what street, between which two streets? North side of street or south side, etc.? It's not easy to tell where you are driving across James Street. Pretty sure it's between West and Miller in the middle of the block.

Sorry I missed it. The substation is on the South side of James. The bar at the far end of the picture was Butch's, different name now. Corner of James & Miller. Butch (George) Sandouk was murdered there in the '80s.

I remember that place, though I don't think I was ever in it. Thanks.

Butch's was a pretty rough place in the 70's. I lived around the corner from there on West St. It was not unusual to find a window broken out as the result of a fight, or to hear police sirens on a Friday or Saturday night, headed to Butch's.
It was one of those places where there were a lot of good folks and a friendly atmosphere one minute, and an explosion of temper and a fist fight the next.

I went to Summer School with Butch (George Sandouk) in the early '60s and we were pretty good friends. Later in the mid '70s, when I remodeled the building across Miller Street for Russ Moreale for him to open Rosario's Pizza I saw Butch again during one of those wild afternoons. Then things got much worse through the years until he was shot down and killed. I never had a desire to go back again.

Russ and Marie were very good friends of mine. I loved their pizza until the day she closed the store on Herkimer Road. When I lived in Point Rock, I patronized Rosario's in Rome until it burned out at the Price Chopper Plaza. Rosinette and Jimmy ran that one.
Butch was a great guy, but the bar was rough. I had forgotten that he was eventually murdered there. That is too bad. Russ Morreale passed away young also, from the complications from diabetes.
When I lived in the 1500 block of West, I drank at Kellys on Arthur St or at the Regency most of the time.

When I lived in the 1500 block of West, I drank at Kellys on Arthur St Bob Renfrew often tended bar there and then he leased Kelly's near the end but failed. I think the Moore's owned it at that time. They also owned the Shamrock on North Genesee Street. Bob was the estimator for Robert F Williams, and I did all the plumbing. We would often go and play golf together from early morning until it got dark. His brother Jim was living in the Historical Apartments that had a fire on Thanksgiving day '07. I had dinner with him that day, and on Dec 1st he died from a heart attack. I can't help but feel that the smoke from the fire was to blame.
