In Appearance Upstate, Kennedy Says Little JEREMY W. PETERS and NICHOLAS CONFESSORE December 17, 2008www.nytimes.com/2008/12/18/nyregion/18upstate.html?emSYRACUSE — In a carefully controlled strategy reminiscent of the vice-presidential hopeful Sarah Palin, aides to Caroline Kennedy interrupted her on Wednesday and whisked her away when she was asked what her qualifications are to be a United States senator. She offered a 30-second statement saying that she would respect the process undertaken by Gov. David A. Paterson to fill the vacancy. When one reporter asked what she would tell New Yorkers who question whether she has the qualifications for the job, Ms. Kennedy, 51, started to respond. But then an aide stopped her from saying more, and led her to the waiting vehicle. Well, duh! She won't be elected by constituents, so why should a member of the Kennedy royal family debase herself by answering a question from the press. The good thing about this story is that it offers a true picture of the political process in NY State. At least she won't have to lie through her teeth to get elected, like her contemporaries."“Hopefully I can come back and answer all those questions,” she called out as she got into the S.U.V." Yeah, hopefully.

Her uncle will be retiring, so I say, "let the Kennedy reign die." Don't know about anyone else but I've had enough of the Kennedy's. Don't really care if she is qualified. Would like to see some "new" young blood in the seat. ;D

bobbbiez, Couldn't agree with you more. I too have had enough of the Kennedy's. How about Cuomo, never was impressed with his father but he seems to be doing a good job (for a Democrat ) and probably stands a good chance of filling the vacancy.

You know Todd, it's always the same old names. Can't believe there isn't any one new that would be interested and eager and who actually lives in N.Y.S. It's just the same old names coming from the same old families. I'm sick of it. Actually, right from the beginning I backed Obama because of that reason. He was new on the scene and I believed his freshness would bring new ideas and changes we needed desperately.

I agree with you. If no other choice, Cuomo would be a better choice then Kennedy.

"Kennedy Says Little" because that's all she has to offer to us here in UPState! She probably thought she had been dropped into some third world jungle - "Guide? Where are we? Do the natives speak English here? Do they 'do lunch'? Where can I shop?".
She has Name Recognition. She will be a Cash Cow for the Democrats. She will be docile, and trot obediently down the Party Path.
At least they're not seriously considering that whiny tree-hugger cousin of hers!
Enough Kennedys already! This is America: we don't HAVE a Royal Family. You want Royals? Go to England!

However, I'm not sure I feel all that bad for New York State citizens. After all, of their own volition, they elected Hillary. Come to think of it, we elected Cuomo, Carey, Rockefeller and Pataki, just thinking of a few tricky folks. Maybe we deserve every con artist we get.

I really don't have a problem at all with Caroline Kennedy taking Hillary Clinton's seat in the Senate. Really what is the problem? As far as the Kennedy's go, she hasn't been involved in any of their scandals. In fact, years go by without really hearing anything about her. I feel that she has lived her life as her mother did, quietly and with dignity.
Did Hillary Clinton have any experience when she ran for Senator? I don't recall her holding public office prior to her winning the Senate seat either.
Hillary Clinton did, however, carpetbag her way into New York State for the purpose of running for Senator. At least Caroline Kennedy has lived in New York for most of her life.

Denise, I guess we just want to see new blood and not from the old time families. There has to be more out there that are qualified and not because they have "the" name or have tons of money to persuade others to go their way. If you know what I mean.

Whoever is the junior senator from NY is simply going to be a puppet to carry the vote of the party. They, as a junior senator will have little to do with any serious agenda of their own. They will simply bolster the majority.

I'm waiting for my phone to ring with his offer to me to take the seat. Suppose I should get something to eat whilst waiting though huh?

Unfortunately, we will probably never see an elected seat go to the "little guy" or "new blood". Especially in the state of New York. This state couldn't have more corrupt politicians if it tried!!!
Caroline Kennedy is fine with me. If there was an election, I'd probably vote for her. Kennedy might be an old name in politics, but when I think of her, I think of her mother and really feel that she was more influenced by her mother's upbringing than her father's family name.
