www.wktv.com/news/local/35409564.htmlHere is an article about an incident that took place on Dec 2nd in my neighbor hood, actually right across the street from me. So I put my Peace Officer status to work and tackled the suspect and detained him until the Police showed up at which time I assisted in placing handcuffs on him. As he sat in the back of the Police car he continued to stare at myself and continued to yell some comments toward myself that I just laughed off with a Trooper on the scene. This suspect oddly enough has recently been released from the prison I work in and vowed before leaving that he would see me on the street. Well, now he has, and I may have won this one but I often wonder what the next encounter will bring. This is not my first interaction with an convict on the street, but this one has really hit home. I now have had a fear for the safety of my family and keep a loaded handgun close to the bed that my wife has been instructed how to use if ever needed (I pray it will never come to this). After wards the whole Joe Corr incident raced through my thoughts with myself replacing Joe. These thoughts continue to race through my mind at all different hours. Although I am not obligated to act or respond to a crime such as a Police Officer, I did feel at the time that it was the right choice for the safety of the neighbor hood that I live in. I now wonder if this is a fear for all Police Officers, if so then it must be a terrible feel that for them is multiplied by hundreds. Although the threats toward me behind the fence are just threats and I have never considered or worried about them. We have always been told that they will avoid us like the plague and keep their distance at all cost. I know his plan was not to involve myself or my family and this fear that I have will hopefully subside over time. I write this article not for a pat on the back, but because I know there are members on the forum that are or has Police Officers in the family that could give me some advice and help put my fears behind me. The big question that I ask myself is should I have gotten involved knowing I didn't have too? My fellow Officers think it's great and one up for the Department of Corrections, but if so then how come I don't feel the same way?

Hey buddy, you are trained to do what you did, whether behind the fence or not. You are familiar with the moves to apprehend and restrain someone, and you did what was necessary to insure the safety of your neighborhood, and hold the perp for the troopers. Congratulations. I am sure you are a hero not only to your fellow officers, but to your neighbors also.
I know that you are probably quite fearful right now, knowing that this creep got into your neighborhood, but most likely doesn't know where YOU live per say and will not be back. I imagine he will be violated and will be back seeing you on a daily basis behind the fence again soon. I think if I had your job, I would have a concealed carry permit and would carry and off-duty piece. Heck, you don't even need a permit, as an officer do you? Any threat to your family and I would make the dirtbag look like a screen door.
My thoughts will be with ya and my prayers for your safety buddy. Hang in there. We all respect the job that you do. Be safe and have a great holiday season. I hope to see ya one way or another while I am in town.

Todd, Not a good feeling when you have to fear for ones family, but don't make yourself crazy over it. We have had that experiences a few times since my boys have been on the force and there are ways to protect yourself and your family. We did invest in a damn good security system and we do have intercoms in different parts of the house including the garage and back patio. I laugh about this one time now but it wasn't funny back then. It was in the summer when the threat was reported by an reliable informant that we were in danger. Get this, I had my whole house decorated like it was Christmas, Halloween and every other holiday you can think of with all kinds of motion sensored decorations. I had everyone laughing their rumps off with this but it gave me a piece of mind while we were going through this. All I can tell you is most all who get caught throws out that threat. Can't tell you how many times my boys have heard, "I know where you live and I'm coming to get you!" I guess it's all they have to say as they're cuffed and being dragged away, because most say it. Congrats on what you've done. If more people and not just in the law enforcement field got involved, we'd have a safer world. Must say, I am witnessing more and more are doing just that and that is the key to taking back our streets. We all have to learn to watch each others backs again.

Todd,
If you havent already apply for a Pistol permit, and then purchase one or maybe two..Read and understand Article 35 and the Use of force in the NYS Penal Law, You have the right to protect yourself and your family members to also include your home.

todd i retired from parole over a year ago i personally took the freedom of 388 men away i still carry a gun daily but i go about my daily business because my training stays with me the fact that i am a a certified pistol and self defense instructor dosent hurt either,, in 1999 a 5k contract was put on my life by a thug called raymond garrett who hired a jamaican drug dealer to kill me ,.. very long story on this needless to say i got raymond 4 years to 8 for conspiracy and met the man who was hired to kill me after the very first weed and seed arrests.. i told him i would see him upon his release he got my meaning very quickly but he indicated to me he was being deported to england for a life sentacne and he felt our business together was over.. this hood succeeded in doing what he set out to do he made you doubt yourself rely on your training never be out and about in the white zone and you will always prevail you are a peace officer if you keep a shield in your pocket you should always have a gun on your hip best of luck, fear not and believe that nobody can get over on you and they wont,,be sure and be decisive hesitation kills!

Toss, you did what you did because of who you are, not necessarily what you are. I really don't think you will have to anticipate retribution, but it never hurts to be aware of your surroundings at all times. ______________________________________________________
Follow Corners advice and you won't go wrong. Keep up the good work.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. I can carry a concealed gun now under my badge as a Peace Officer and make a felony arrest. I also posses a full carry gun permit with no restrictions. The problem with a permit is that you can not carry a concealed weapon in New York City, where as I can with my badge.
Although I hope I never have to use deadly force off duty or on duty but also I have no problem or hesitation if I did have to exercise that right to protect myself, family or fellow Officer.
I would not want my son to ever see something like this or for him or my wife to not feel safe and secure in their own home. I have not carried a handgun and cuffs in many years, but this incident has caused myself to rethink this.
It's truly a shame what has become of this world. I remember as a kid (not long ago) living home with my parents, I never had a key to the house because the house was never locked except for when we went to bed. I don't even think my parents locked the car doors.
Now you can't even let your kid play out in the yard or ride his bike down the street or around the block, regardless of the neighborhood you live.
Thanks again for the encouragement!

One should become cautious to ones surroundings at all times, but don't let this incident alter your life. Fear is a terrible thing and, yes, we have all dealt with it in one form or another, but fear can also make your life sheer hell. Don't allow this one slum bag do that to you and your family. Stay strong my friend. The strong and the good does prevail. Blessings to you and yours.

I know before they changed the law in N.Y.C., my boys as Police Officers could not carry their weapons. Now, they can and have. I believe it's been that way now for approximately 10 yrs since they revised that.

If you posses a pistol permit it is not valid in NY City. A NY State Corrections Officer can carry a gun with his badge in NY City. I am not sure how it works for LEO.
Corner, As far as carrying in the United States, I didn't think that law got passed. If so I would be interested in reviewing it if you have it.
