The last time I used Skype, yes, I think I was able to simultaneously type. It's been a while and I also used AIM (type or voice) around that time. The weird thing I found about Skype was the way it handles data interruptions. Other VOIP (voice over internet protocol) services I've used just stop when the data stream is interrupted (packets not arriving on time) and a second or so later resume. So words are interrupted between syllables. But Skype aurally lengthens out the last syllable so that it sounds like the person is slurring their words. The first time I used it, I thought my caller was drunk. Yes, a voice cluster is like a conference call, but with relatively long periods of quiet between "posts." Frankly, I'd rather use a list cluster so that I could refer back to each entry. If you have IRC (Chat) software on your computer, can you get on StarChat? I tried earlier, but wasn't able to do it. See this page: www.ircaonline.org/chat.htmand www.ircaonline.org/index1.html

Dave....in case there has been some misunderstanding when I asked about using Skype re shortwave. I use Skype so know how the software works etc. I just did not know about using it for shortwave radio stuff and its relations when you mentioned the clusters.
Don't want you to go thru all that posting for nothing. I don't have IRC... I think I did check it out once. Not much of a talker in chat areas unless there is something really worth talking about and a common interest. I don't have a shortwave radio either. I was just curious about the whole operation. Thanks for all the explanations.

Yep I hang out mostly on the .17 but do frequent the .76 and .33 on occasion.
And I finally did it- I downloaded EchoLink onto my computer- cant wait to see how it works.

Something that Swimmy wrote today about the shooting tragedy in Binghamton stuck out in my mind. It appears the government is able to shut down cell communications whenever they choose to do so. Maybe it's the domestic terrorist in me that is hopeful that there are many ham operators still around. When the tea starts hitting the harbor, hams may be our only ability to communicate. That's not true Frank, It's a rumor nothing more. They'd have so many liability problems they can't do it.
