The feds control the nation’s highway speeds by simply refusing to give our tax money back to states who don’t comply with the federal recommendations. You saw that happen in the 1970's when speeds were reduced to 55 to “save lives, save gas.” What backdoor maneuver will the feds utilize to control the Internet? FCC Paves Way For Free Wi-Fi www.informationweek.com/news/telecom/regulation/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=211200236With a gift, of course. The FCC is auctioning off the 2100 MHz. spectrum and the winning company will have to promise free Wi-Fi to the nation. But don’t miss the final sentence of the story: “The company that wins the spectrum would have to ensure that the network filters out obscene content, and it would have to cover 95% of the U.S. population in 10 years.” Free Wi-Fi may drive ISP’s out of that business and leave the government as the only Internet provider. No porn for you! Maybe no other stuff for you, either, down the road. What do you think will be banned from the Internet after sex?

The estimates I have seen for the percentage of web site with pornographic content varies but 50% is a possible number.
Maybe a porn free WiFi network would guarantee the continued existance of independent ISP's.

Is that the International NO-FRANKCOR symbol? I didn't want to be obvious. It's just a test. If it works out, you'll be famous.

There's just not enough bandwidth in a day. If the sites ran movies at triple speed, it would save a lot of time.

I thought it was a "no sex on franks island" sign. Looks like it's going to get boring Frank.

The fact is this- Free WiFi will be like getting TV from rabbit ears. Yes its going to be free but if you actually want to "get" online then you are going to need to pay for it.

True, Ryan. Just because it's wi-fi, doesn't mean it will be at the standard speed. There have been a few instances of companies offering a city' residents free wi-fi. In one I'm familiar with (and I don't mean to imply this will be what is offered via the FCC) people get only a limited couple of hours per month and would have to pay for full service. That particular offer was based on the company's business plan of attracting a number of new customers. That offer evaporated, by the way, when an expert, hired to confirm the company's plan, reduced the potential number of takers.
