I believe the founding fathers WERE the ruling class of their day. I think they were more afraid of on-shore demagogues and off-shore tyrants. As well as European politics. Oh, and high local taxes. Government is a machine. It runs the country. It is necessarily large and complex. If you look at any post monarchical government, citizens have always tried to get some control over it. That's like trying to get control over the weather, which is much more chaotic. Our elected politicians are like benighted soldiers sent out to slay the dragon. They won't win, but they help with the balance of power between us and the bureaucracy. Hopefully. The world (or Jefferson, Madison and Monroe, were they alive) has never seen such a technologically advanced civilization trying to function, keep itself from imploding and take care of the majority of citizens. Not to say there aren't inequities and thieves in office, but I think government is doing a decent job. CG is right. Let's watch a baseball game.

I agree with Dave. The founding fathers feared allowing the general population to elect the leaders. They feared the general population would elect the wrong person for the wrong reasons. For a long time, the general population could not even vote for Senators. Senators were appointed or selected (I can't remember which) by the individual state legislatures. And their fears have been realized, look at senator clinton. What a mistake we New Yorkers made in electing her. We still have an electoral college and are not allowed to elect our president directly.

We still have an electoral college and are not allowed to elect our president directly. And yet we got Jimmy Carter!
