I am surprised to hear about the "blue bird" BHU. Wow. We buy Butterball breasts once in a while and have never had a bad experience with them. We have never been exceptionally fussy about brand. Kathy always puts butter under the skin of the breast of a whole turkey whether it be a butterball or a store brand and whether self-basting or not. She also bastes the bird several times and toward the end of cooking she sometimes injects the breast meat with pan juices with one of those injector things. When we lived in NY I usually bought a fresh turkey that came from that turkey farm on Rt 11 near Cicero. ALWAYS good. One year a company I worked part time for gave us one of those turkeys for Christmas. They were in a cardboard box and we had to pick them up at North Bay Market. The box with my name on it had a turkey in it that weighed 24 lbs. That thing was so big we had to have our local meat cutter in Barneveld saw it in half on a bandsaw because it wouldn't fit in the oven. I knew when we took it out of the box that it wasn't about to fit in the wall oven we had at the time. lol We bought Butterball before we got the bad one but it just turned us off that brand. We cook the turkey just like Kathy does but here we brush it with a little vegetable oil which helps it to brown & she also bastes it. One year I brined the turkey for about 10 hrs & that bird was as juicy as can be. I only did it once because the other half was none too happy with the extra work involved with rising off the salt water etc. Lol Tomorrow we'll check the ads & see if there's any sales on turkeys but I'm not counting on it. I imagine that shortly after the first of November the turkey sales will start to hit the ads.

We sell a lot of those smoked turkey legs to quite a large discerning clientele. Usually the ones that try to roll out with the boxes of Snow Crab legs..............without paying for them.

I had to make a dreaded trip to Wally again today for Food Saver vacuum sealer bags. They seem to be the only game in town. Target is always out of them. I probably should order them on-line and have them delivered here to the house/ The city cops were trotting some guy out through the garden center in cuffs. That's the first time I have ever seen anyone cuffed up in a Walmart store. Right behind them was the perp's girlfriend calling the cops naughty names.

I have a feeling that once Xmas shopping kicks into high gear they'll be rolling out the door with a lot more then Snow Crab Legs.

Scumbags with a sophisticated pallet I guess. I wouldn't give you five bucks for a bucket load of snow crab legs. Too damned much work for too little crab meat. When we used to go to Cape Cod with my ex-wife's parents for a week every fall I would eat them, but it was not my absolute first choice. Her sister taught us how to use bandage scissors to open the legs up.

I just got the Aldi's ad in todays paper. Butterball frozen turkeys are on sale for $1.07 lb. the other markets here have not started any discounted sale prices on turkeys.
Also canned pumpkin has been ridiculously high around here in recent weeks. Today Aldi is advertising pumpkin for $1.99 per can. Time to buy a case of 12 for Kathy's pumpkin breads. She was looking at a possibility of having to make banana bread instead due to pumpkin price.

Hannaford's has Shady Brook Farms turkeys for $1.49 which isn't bad. I looked at Price Chopper's ad & I saw no listings for turkeys, which is no surprise as there only in business to rob customers blind anyway.

Aldi's really slashed the price. When I was there a few days ago I just looked at the tag on a butterball for the heck of it. It was over $30. They didn't have the SMOKED Butterballs in the ad. I assume at $1.07 per pound a person could purchase a pretty good sized turkey for 15 bucks or so. About half what they cost less than a week ago. After I bought all the turkeys I need the casino sent me a promotion card for a free butterball turkey. LOL There really is no big dividends being paid for the money we spend there. We each got a $25 gas card a few weeks ago, we each get $25 free play every week to suck us into coming, and last week we each got a blue tooth speaker. At the end of the month we are going to each get a free George Foreman grill. I hit $837 when they first opened, and I have gone in with 50 or 100 and come out with over 200 several times. It still doesn't equal what we have spent, but we sincerely enjoy it. We just quit and leave when we have doubled what we put in on any given day. Quite often one of us makes enough to cover both of our investments. We always leave our credit and debit cards at home and only take what cash we want to spend, along with our driver's license for ID in case we hit something over the amount that requires signing a tax form. that turkey will most likely be the most expensive bird I have ever purchased.

I was in Walmart North Utica today and one of the associates was unpacking this HUGE CARBOARD BOX of Turkeys and placing them in a large center isle cooler. Had to be over 100 turkeys he was taking out of that box and placing in the cooler. Considering the weight of each bird that is a lot of lifting. I forgot to check the price again. I noticed that the shelves in every isle was well packed with all types of items just waiting to be purchased by various people. I bought a large laundry bag so I can send out my laundry to a service to be washed, dried and folded. Check it out sudshare.com/ I will call them tomorrow and see how this works. I hate doing laundry and what with being sick fell way to far behind so even if it costs me $20.00 it is well worth the price.

When I was living on James St when I was single between marriages I used to take my fire department uniforms, Central Coach uniforms, as well as my normal everyday laundry to Ben Julian's laundromat on Oneida St. They charged by the pound. It used to cost me about a quarter per pound and they folded all the laundry and put my shirts and uniforms on hangers. We are going back to the mid seventies but I think it was only 5 or 6 bucks a week plus a tip for the girl. It was quite nice to just unwrap the butcher paper bundles and put my underwear and socks in the drawer and towels in the linen closet. You might save a buck or two if you wear your underwear for 2 or 3 days, turn them inside out, and wear them another 2 or 3 days.

If you have a smart phone get the Flipp app. It has all the flyers we use to get in all the papers. I dont get the paper anymore and some don't print flyers anymore. (Like Walgreens). Helps to see all the sales at your fingertips.

I was fortunate. I talked to a friend the other day that works at Krogers and he said butter was among the things expected to take a huge jump so I bought 10lbs last week at $2.99. Today it is $4.99 and that is for the store brand. Land o Lakes is $5.99. I occasionally buy a half pound package of Kerrygold to specifically use on our morning toast. Today that was $4.99. We use a lot of butter for cooking, baking, and on cooked veggies. I always buy it at least 5lbs at a time. Neither of us can stand margarine. For those of us that remember Spry shortening, my dad always said margarine was nothing but whipped Spry with a little yellow coloring. Three was always a tub of Country Crock in their fridge for my mom but dad wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.
