I am loving the generosity series. I stopped to think of something that I do better than anyone else in the world. After much thought I am completely at a loss to find "something that I do better than anyone else in the world." I do MANY things well. My skills include everything from running a dairy farm to working as an EMT and crash firefighter, to managing two fleets of vehicles, one in the US and the other in Germany, each of which were composed of over 200 vehicles.
In MY opinion I did ALL of those things well. Did I do it better than anyone else in the world? NOPE! Someone taught me each and every skill that I possess and over the years I have found myself striving to do better than those that taught me. In most cases I have been satisfied to be equally as skilled as my mentors and teachers, but by no means have I, nor those that taught me, become the "best in the world." The good news is that the generosity of those that taught me has left me with a desire to improve, and also a desire to share those skills and teach others. I am extremely grateful to those who had the patience and took the time to instill those skills in me.
There are a few specific things that I have specifically felt driven to share over the years. When I was an EMT I was considered to be quite adept in caring for those in need of medical intervention. It inspired me to teach others and I did the necessary teaching as an assistant instructor and eventually became NY state certified to teach the EMT course as a Senior Instructor. I like to think that many lives were saved by those with whom I shared the skills. I also was a certified Red Cross advance first aid and CPR instructor for several years.
Probably the most important thing that I have succeeded at up to the present time is staying sober as a recovering alcoholic. I was taught principles that allowed me to avoid drinking, one day at a time. Had I not been taught those principles and skills, none of my other skills would most likely have been honed or achieved. I learned those principles from a group of people over a period of years, but most importantly from two individuals that took me under their wing and nursed me along. Over the years I shared the experiences and those principles with many. It is not necessarily a skill. It is a behavior and a lifestyle change, and it is critical change that one can never become complacent with. I am not the best in the world but it has kept my life on track since 1976 and to this day I am ALWAYS ready and willing to help someone else achieve sobriety and a path to recovery. The biggest thing that I share with others is that it can all go away in one weak moment. It is a matter of sharing time, sharing experiences, and sharing a caring ear.
Generosity is a skill in itself. A skill that my parents certainly possessed and passed down to all three of us children. I try to insure that I do something for someone else each day. Am I better at it than anyone else in the world? Hell no, but I think we should all at least TRY to do something to make someone else's life a bit easier every day. Let someone else know that you are there and that you care.

Generosity certainly DOES begin with gratitude. I don't know about anyone else, but my days begin with thanking the Lord for yet another day that I am allowed to climb out of bed and enjoy the blessings that he continues to shower me with. With a realization of how blessed I am, I make a conscious effort to share with others less fortunate. Whether it be with food, material goods, or sharing time, listening, and helping them to have a better day. The good Lord knows that in my darker days a good many people shared their time, their experiences, and their encouragement. Bottom line is that my gratitude is a result of the generosity of others and a merciful Lord. Today people call that sort of grateful awareness driven generosity "paying it forward."
