PICENTE: 2 CASES OF OMICRON VARIANT IDENTIFIED IN ONEIDA COUNTY
Two cases of Omicron have been identified in Oneida County, according to County Executive Anthony Picente.
"Oneida County has confirmed with the New York State Health Department that we have two cases of COVID-19 that have tested positive for the Omicron variant. We are conducting a full investigation," said Picente.

According to Picente, when the state tests for COVID-19, some of the results are skewed, which will trigger a retest for a specific strain or variant, and that is how these cases were identified.
The individuals who have tested positive for the Omicron variant were over the age of 60 and received both shots of the vaccine but not a booster.
Five cases of Omicron were confirmed downstate on Friday, Dec. 3, in Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island. Picente says to his knowledge, these are the first Omicron cases identified in Upstate New York.
Picente said, "I just got off the phone with the governor, obviously the governor is aware of this and working with the State Health Department." He added, "We talked in length about different options but have not made any definitive decision as of yet."
Gov. Kathy Hochul said the first cases of Omicron in NYC were "not cause for major alarm," and said she doesn't foresee any shutdowns or changes to current protocols.
Picente urges everyone to get their booster shot, get children vaccinated, and wear a mask in public.
There were 473 cases of COVID-19 confirmed in the county from Friday, Dec. 3 through Sunday, Dec. 5. The county currently has 1,635 active cases, with 78 people hospitalized. Of the people hospitalized, 49 are unvaccinated.

Is it just a little longer than a week that it was found in South Africa. Faster movement than I expected. Shit
