ROME SCHOOLS GOING REMOTE FOLLOWING INCREASE IN COVID CASES AMONG BUS DRIVERS
ROME, N.Y. – Rome City School District is going remote for a week following a cluster of COVID-19 cases among school bus drivers at First Student.
Superintendent Peter Blake says there’s been a “significant increase” in bus drivers testing positive for COVID, adding to an existing shortage that’s already led to late pick-ups and drop-offs throughout the district.
The district has decided to switch K-12 students to fully remote instruction from Oct. 1 – Oct. 11. The plan is to return to in-person learning on Tuesday, Oct. 12.
Teachers will continue to come to work and teach lessons virtually from their classrooms.
All Pre-K programs will remain in person because those students do not take a bus to school.
Student-athletes will be contacted individually about transportation to and from practices and games.
Blake says all extracurricular activities will go on at the schools during the remote learning week.
Following the Rome district's decision Thursday, Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente wrote a letter to Gov. Kathy Hochul asking for assistance to help keep schools open.
The letter reads: "I am requesting that you take immediate action to help alleviate this crisis. Whether it is deploying the National Guard to drive buses or requiring school districts to amend hours of operation to stay open, I am open to discussing any valid solution. I am requesting you take action to put our children's education first. For too long in this pandemic their needs have been treated as secondary."

And Utica at least in the high school is having all kinds of fighting going on throughout the day and after school. Police have been present so far. Why are so many kids fighting each other. I know an aid over there and she was telling me about the constant fighting throughout the day
