www.wktv.com/news/local/26358164.htmlSome of the best quality's we have left are now on the verge of being robbed from us. I have been down to NY City and there is a big difference between Half Moons and Black and Whites. I have never seen Tomato Pie anywhere or anything similar other than here. We ordered pizza one night from Joe's and a lady from the NYC started laughing and saying it's an upside down pizza. We are unique in our Half Moons, Italian Bakery's, Tomato Pie, Pizza and even Chicken Riggie's. These other states will always try to duplicate but will never master what we have accomplished. These are the small things that make me proud to live in the Utica.

You are right Todd. Utica and Central NY has unique food items found nowhere else in the world. There is a recipe on Joe Mezz's site, CNY Forum, for half moons, and there may be one for tomato pie also, I am not sure. I have to go to a meeting, but I will check on Joes site later for recipes, and link to a place where you can order a cookbook with ALL those local favorites in it. I will get back to ya.

These are the small things that make me proud to live in the Utica. One man's Halfmoon Cookie is another man's drop cookie with chocolate and vanilla fondant frosting. One man's Tomato Pie is another man's focaccia. One man's Chicken Riggies is another man's Rigatoni con Pollo with Cream. Given a choice of battles, I think the only dish Utica can really lay claim to is riggies, but I think even that is contestable. I'd really like to see a professional food historian tackle that one in particular, since I once had an argument with a guy that was convinced Chicken Riggies were just a minor regional variation of Pasta Puttanesca.

Puttanesca (the Whore's Sauce) is a barely-cooked marinara containing anchovies and capers. It has nothing in common with Riggies. I hope you kicked that guy's ass, gear. My recipe is here.
