Dave - the girl you just described could have been me as I'm white and Irish and was married at the age of 16 and gave birth to 3 children by the time I was 19. BUT - that is where the difference stops.
My Mom encouraged me to go back to HS and complete my Senior Year and obtain my HS Disploma which I did 3 weeks after my first child was born. By the time I was 25, I left my husband due to Domestic Abuse, left my home which we had bought 2 years before, took my children and HS Disploma and faced the fact I was now going to be solely responsible for supporting everyone.
Started my working career by working in a factory 3-11PM shift, went to Business School during 9-2;30PM for a year until I graduated and got my first job as a Senior Steno for the NYS Supreme Court. I worked all my life since then ending up retiring after 23 years in a Professional position from a local insurance company.
So, Corner, your friend can do what I did. All it takes is determination, belief in yourself, having a goal and willing to work to achieve it, and great parents that encouraged you every step of the way.
