This is ridiculous- there have been so many wrecks at that spot (Steuben Corners). Granted this one involved a drunk driver but its just a flat out dangerous spot. Someone really needs to take a bulldozer and knock down that Grange building- that is completely empty. There is NO possible way to see around it. It is a hazard and many more people are going to be killed- all because of a building.

I've heard now that the kid wasn't drunk and that when the report comes back it will be clean. Let's hope so. Any way you look at it, even if he wasn't drunk, his life has been changed. Although it wasn't entirely his fault, the other driver pulled out in front of him. Makes you wonder if she would have survived if she was wearing her seatbelt. A sad, sad situation all around!

We can only hope for the sake of the Randazzo kid, that his tests come back negative. It is quite possible to be shaken and in shock, and not be able to pass "field sobriety tests." I can't imagine slamming another car broadside, being under all the stress of seeing the carnage of people that were thrown from the wreckage, and then having a trooper ask me to walk on a line, toe to heel. Doing so in a shaken condition, in the dark, with all those lights flashing around you might be difficult for anyone, drunk or not.
It is such a shame that a young woman with the bright future was killed. It is another case where a seat belt might have saved a life. Just like the crash in Litchfield that took the life of the young girl that was also thrown from the back seat and ejected from the car.
I don't know the Randazzo boy, but I DO know the corner well, where the accident ocurred. The old Grange building DOES need to go, or else there needs to be a 4-way stop there and a flashing red light.
I also find it ironic that we have a young man "alleged" to be under the influence, and he is being prematurely incriminated in the OD, when Donna's kid was PROVEN to be drunk by a breathalizer, guilty of hit and run, and we had to "force" the issue to get any information at all out into the daylight of public scrutiny.
It is possible for the Randazzo boy to be guilty of DWI, and still not be at fault or negligent in the accident. I would be curious to see if the law would still find him guilty of vehicular homicide, if he was not at fault for the accident. Maybe swimmy can speak to that issue.
My prayers are with the families of everyone in both of the cars involved. If the husband of the girl killed, pulled into the path of the Randazzo boy, that poor man will feel that guilt and relive that moment for the rest of his life, as he raises his children with no mother.
Sometimes fault is not as important as compassion for those involved. Sometimes being in the wrong place at the wrong time brings about sad results. Sometimes a split second of inattention or misjudgment can have dire consequences, rather than an accident being attributed to gross negligence on the part of the parties involved. That is why we call them "accidents." They damn sure aren't brought about "on purpose."

Have you guys been keeping up with this on the OD Web Page- It amazes me how quick (well maybe not) people are willing to hang Randazzo.

Yeah I really hope this comes back clean for the driver here. Something like this would hurt less if it was just another accident, rather than a DWI of course. However, if they come back dirty let me reserve the first slot to put down a few choice words.

No updates on the DUI situation or further investigation results, but the grange building that was the cause was on fire last night at 8"26 PM according to the OD. Hmmm. I would almost have to guess that someone decided that the red tape had strung out for a little too long, and that it is time for the building to be gone. I hope it went to the ground ,so all that is needed is cleanup, and no further delays to wait for permits or whatever.
It sucks that government has to wait for fatalities to do anything. Intersections have to have a certain number of accidents or fatalities to rate a signal, and now a woman died because the building has been in Limbo for years.
Can't say as I approve of arson, but Kudos to whoever burned this monstrosity, and I hope there is nothing left but a pile of smoking rubble and metal roofing.

From what I understand the someone put the fire out even before the Fire Department got there Quite frankly I would think that the building would make a good candidate for Fire Training for the local departments.

As much as I feel sorry for her I still can't ignore the fact that SHE could have killed someone because of the fire she set.

Report says she's charged with arson in the fifth degree. Fifth degree? That might be less of an offense than smoking on the bus. For some reason ... maybe it's just my predilection ... I was glad they didn't breathalyze her.
