VTL is a powerful law. Even prevents jaywalkers from crossing outside a crosswalk. Well, wait till Charlton Heston hears about this! Down here in Saugerties, in the village at least, we always walk in the road. (I'm not kidding; the scenic old bluestone sidewalks are pretty, but subject to frost heave, etc. and are not really comfortable or safe to walk on, especially if you're getting on in years. Winters are especially dicey.) The laws are only one part of the problem. The other part is the "cop mentality" that needs everyone to always follow the rules. You know, The Rules?

Wcup, you have my total support on that one . The reason it has gotten out of control is because it has been ignored too long . I may be wrong but I always thought there was a law on the books concerning that. Wcup, if not then just let me know and I promise you, I will help you get one passed by our common council to get one put on, but remember one "very" important thing, all have to enforce it to correct the problem.

What? What? You mean people in Utica will no longer have the right to walk in the streets? Do you know what you're saying? Can you imagine how many complete revolutions our Founding Fathers are rolling over in their graves? You want the right to bear arms but not be able to walk in the road? Why not deputize literal "Storm Troopers," you know, during Storms, and have them round up everyone walking in the road after snow depth gets above 3 inches? And while they're out there on the street, they might as well confiscate peoples' boots and mittens so they won't break the law a second time before spring. We have to have Rules. Rules. That's it. I'm going to bed. But I won't sleep well.

No, it's sort of like the right to associate freely. Maybe its in English common law. I'll look for it tomorrow. I think you'll recognize it.

Oh to assemble and associate? That's part of the first amendment. But I don't think the Sup. Ct. has ever extended that to allowing you a right to walk in the middle of the road.

Dave, for "someones" freedom of movement why should I have to suffer the rest of my life if I have an accident and just happen to hit and kill that "someone" who doesn't have the common sense to walk on the sidewalks. And don't give me that lame excuse of snow on the sidewalks because not everyone doesn't shovel theirs and these "someones, (stupid ones)," walk in the road all year round. I had an incident happen to me one rainy night when I almost didn't see a young woman walking in the road pushing a baby carriage. If it wasn't for the chrome on the carriage shinning when my car lights hit it that woman and her baby would probably be dead today. Total stupidity on her part. Needless to say I was sick to my stomach for weeks thinking about what could have happened if I had hit her and killed both. I was so upset that I wrote a letter to the editor in the OD about the whole incident hoping to wake up those "someones" but nothing changed. If anything more are doing it. Yes, something has to be done to curb this bull sh--!

The snow excuse doesn't work in Utica or New Hartford because you'll find them in the streets year round irrespective snow coverage.

Bet if we stated hitting a few of them they wouldn't be walking there anymore.

No, they'd be suing in court, probably win, and start walking down the middle of the major highways too.

Bet if we stated hitting a few of them they wouldn't be walking there anymore. That'd work. I've begun this morning the long and arduous journey of forming a Road Walker Rights Group. Calling ourselves the Offal Obstacles our slogans are, "We're Mad as Hell and We're on Your Macadam!" and "Don't Tread On Me (Literally)." We'll have an official T-shirt that reads, "I am your worst roadkill nightmare!" We'll invoke St. Brendan as our patron saint. Our first event will occur in Utica on May 1, 2008, when we will spill down Genesee St. in the middle of the road wearing jackets and ties, disguised as high school kids marching in honor of the Blessed Mother. Remember that? www.windsweptpress.com/ilaparade.htm
