I will be taking advantage of the warm weather to finish my fall chores in the enjoyable warm and balmy temperatures. I always enjoy Indian Summer and spend as much time outside as I can, but how long the great weather will last is always a bit unpredictable. I try to get as much accomplished as I can while the pleasant temperatures last, knowing that the anticipated "thermal crash" is going to come eventually and the days when the ability to comfortable work outside with in a short sleeved shirt are numbered. Yep. At some point I have to accept the fact that summer is over and that we will have those dreary and cold days to contend with for 3 or 4 months before we can once more put away our heavy jackets and once again break out the sweat shirts and light jackets.
What do you folks do to occupy your time in winter?
I guess if you ski or snowmobile, winter is your favorite time of year. I always enjoyed hunting and enjoying a day in the woods with light snow on the ground or falling gently. I enjoyed looking out over the lake when I lived on Kayuta lake, watching the deer come across the ice and up through the yard in the morning. On cold winter nights it was relaxing to just sit in a chair reading a good book while the fire burned in the fireplace. But THEN on the contrary, came the miserable days of wading through slush everywhere we went, shoveling and blowing snow with the wind whipping around my face, the crappy white stains on my shoes and all over the vehicles from the corrosive road salt, and the nasty looking dirty snowbanks along the roads.
I still hate winter, but it is much more tolerable and much shorter here. It is still a time when we are limited by temperature and confined to the house much of the time. With the pandemic winter brings a bit more pronounced atmosphere of isolation or confinement. My children and grand children are all in NY, Florida and Ohio so we don't have that ability to share a family dinner or enjoy those drop in visits. The biggest impact has been the inability to travel and the cancellation of our normal vacation to NY and/or Ohio. We make the best of it. We still socialize with my brother and sister, and have a small and limited circle of friends that we spend time with and we still are able to get out to bowl and grab coffee with our small group while observing social distancing on Thursday nights. Relative isolation does not have to mean depression though. We still plan our days over coffee in the mornings, and are able occupy our time with things we enjoy. If we DO feel a bit blue or confined, we get into the truck and take a ride.
Today it is expected to go to 77 degrees with sunshine. I am finally finished with leaves for the most part. I took off that bagging attachment last night in preparation for hitching up the garden cart to the tractor and working to prep the garden for winter and for next spring. What few leaves remain on the trees are sparse enough to just mulch up with the mower. Today I will pull up the remaining plants, pull up all the wooden stakes, and roll up the 2 foot tall vinyl fencing that will be stored until spring.
All of the popular PBA pro's are in town for an invitational tournament. Maybe later today I will stop by and watch them bowl for a few minutes if the crowd is not to large and people are wearing masks. There must be a few bucks in pro bowling. We went past the bowling alley last night and one side of the parking lot was occupied by several large motor homes that probably cost from $200,000 up. How great is it to be able to make a substantial living while enjoying a sport that you love. One of the only remaining professional sports where people are not kneeling during the national anthem or making political statements or endorsing candidates.
Yep, a sunny day here in the South. I hope ya'll are able to get out and enjoy that 70 degree and sunny weather in beautiful upstate NY. If we were there we would be taking a ride up North and would either stop at a restaurant for lunch or would pack sandwiches, some chips, and a thermos of hot coffee to be eaten by one of the beautiful lakes.
With all the turmoil in the news, shut off the TV and get outside. This good weather is a reminder of how blessed we are and that God has our back and it will be his will that is done in the end. Whatever happens politically it is beyond our control so we need to make peace with it, accept it and move on. Have a happy, heathy and safe day.
