www.uticaod.com/news/x518446606/Utica-police-Varick-Street-fight-an-isolated-incidentThey say an isolated incident, but getting to be more common. This seems like a cover up due to the Mayor's connection with the owner of the Hollyrock Bar. Utica Police are fighting a huge image problem. They have lost what respect they once had and with all the new recruits hired they have no experience to handle such problems. I speak from experience when I say no academy or text book will ever teach you how to handle an unruly crowd and or riot especially when the anger is directed at you. Only experience and time can be the true teacher. I never remember a City Police Department needing the reinforcements from Village, Town, County and State agencies to handle a problem that ended with 10 arrest. Utica Police needs to re-instill the fear back into these animals with a less than zero tolerance for this animistic behavior or keep track of these outlaws and not let them back in any function in Utica. The same method that was used in the riots at Soccer games.

Today it's all about "political correctness" as well as trying to avoid the inevitable lawsuit for (pick one we all know the list is long) whatever.

What's the mayor's connection to Demer (is that his name?)?

Well I suppose there is that as well, but……is the dog wagging the tail here, or the tail wagging the dog?
Keep in mind that all the “clubs” down there are nothing more than glorified corner bars. Maybe a little live music now and again and certainly a little glimpse of T&A to liven things up.
But I can remember the fights that would ensue around the neighborhood at the little corner drinking holes that used to be here, and I would be willing to bet that what they brought in for revenue over the week (in Cornhill alone) would outweigh what Varick Street brings in for the week.
We may have a helluva “Brewery District” full of pubs, but we have lost a whole lot more of them in the process.

I wan't there so this is pure speculation, but it sounds like the way police confronted the situation just made things worse.
When drunk women start hitting cops who are trying to arrest their boyfriends, things have really gotten out of hand. You would never see that at Mardi Gras in the Big Easy.

No, you would never see it there because there would be immediately 6-10 large burly patrolmen moving in to squash them.
Nothing intimidating about 2 or 4 cops coming for a bunch of you and your buddies. In N.O. they come at you and you two friends with a damn squad!
You want to have an event, you damn well better be able to control it.....hands down with numbers.

Hollyrock is a hole anyway. I have only been there twice and the two times I've been I couldn't wait to get out. Everyone looks like they are on something.

Do ya think there might be more crack rocks than holly rocks??? Hell, I always thought that it was kinda non threatening to see people smoking a little herb to enhance the effects of a beer or two, but crack and meth, don't make for such a mellow mood I would guess.
I remember once in Vernon, I was at Nice and Easy getting gas when all hell broke loose at a tavern that was kitty corner from the store. Cops came from everywhere, and this big burly guy on PCP, broke handcuffs, tore a door off a police cruiser, and eventually had to be held down by a number of officers and hog tied with a rope, hand and foot.
Now THAT is not the guy I would like to meet in a bar and have a disagreement with, over a 25 cent game of pool.
I was in the Oriskany Grill many years ago when a fracas broke out. A big old Irish cop and his partner responded. They handcuffed one guy, and when his buddies started threatening and getting out of hand, the big cop and his partner stood with their batons, and the big one said "come one at a time, or all together, the baton can't count." Things quieted down and they took the troublemaker away. LOL

Honestly I can tell you all the mayor and demar have NO connection. But I can say this fight at hollyrock was between a lot of people that live in Kennedy apartments.. I know someone who's relative works there and let me tell you. they were all braggin about what happened and talking shit about cops.. esp God rest his soul officer lindsey. So too bad they all just didn't beat the shit out of eachother.. I am sick of scum I honestly like hollyrock esp when they have bands. like showtime, charlie band.. they are great! they just need to take care of their restrooms better.. but the drinks are expensive just wish that would deter the scum but i guess not

Well, a piece just popped up on the OD homepage, stating that Demar lost his temporary permit to sell alcohol at the new place in Sylvan Beach. Same sort of complaints. 20 complaints about noise, drinking outdoors, loud music, fighting, all the usual crap that goes with uncontrolled chaos. A few security personnel, and some rules would probably prevent most of that crap. When my oldest son was in the area, he was a bouncer at one of the bars in the beach. They checked ID, maintained a certain amount of order, and didn't let people outside with their drinks. We can thank the smoking laws for a lot of the chaos of having noisy drunks outside. I guess politicians didn't think of that when they curtailed business owner's right to determine whether or not they would allow smoking. I personally don't smoke, but I think it ridiculous to legislate bar owners right to have ashtrays on the bar or in a bowling alley. If non smokers don't like smoke, let them stay home, or go to an establishment that CHOOSES to run a non-smoking establishment.
I don't care for rock music, loud noise, and baggy pants, but I don't think that they should necessarily outlaw all those things in public places. I don't think that jukeboxes in bars will be outlawed.

Honestly I can tell you all the mayor and demar have NO connection. Wrong! They are known to be very good friends. Any Mayor who allows this animistic behavior and ignores the safety of his Police Officers is a total disgrace and should step down. The Mayor and City should be embarrassed that they had to call in so many outside agency to handle there own garbage. Then again they have a Mayor that is not use to dealing with alive people.

never once has it been said that him and Demar are good friends-I will ask him i am sure they know each other but never once said they are "good"freinds.. and. why should utica and the mayor be embarrased that they needed help? All lawn enforcement works together.
I would never ever be embarrased to have another law enforcement angency come take care of SCUM...

I have heard one disturbing story of Demar and let me just say he is scum. Telling his employees that he isn't going to pay them, and this just hasn't happened to one person it has happened to a group of people.

I've heard rumors about the place and those involved with it, but rumors tend to be just that. Any Mayor would need to be aware of which business is where and what is involved in who and why. ;D
UPD has tasers now, don't they?
