Sadly there are not enough Catholics down here in the predominantly Baptist and evangelical South for the Friday night, or Lenten fish fry to be available other than to order the fish and chips at Perkins or IHOP, which includes a couple of previously frozen fish portions and fries and a couple of hushpuppies, or Captain D's for fast food seafood dinners. The whitefish at Captain D's is a reasonable substitute for haddock, but not as good as fresh haddock. I sometimes buy the fish at the drive-thru and bring it home. Kathy makes home made slaw, and we put fries in the air fryer oven.
We truly miss being able to find a wide selection of possible destinations for our weekly haddock fish fry that we always enjoyed on Friday nights. We were never any farther than a few minutes drive of an assortment of choices of restaurants, fire departments, or veterans organization posts that offered a good quality, and generous fish fry for a reasonable price.
We don't see haddock offered on menus in this area. I don't know if it is because we are so far inland or what, but most fried fish dinners here are either whitefish, cod, or catfish. You folks in CNY don't know how fortunate you really are to have seafood, fresh and never frozen, delivered daily from the New England coast. We usually enjoy at least two fish fry dinners when we come up on vacation. One at the Knight's Spot in Frankfort and another at the Emerald Room at Turning Stone.
Someone have a great big slab of fried haddock and a side of macaroni salad and cole slaw for me. I drool just thinking about it.
