That's right, Clipper, mile marker nine is directly in front of the old State Hospital, so I felt right at home. Kim, you would have been awfully tired after nine miles, I'll bet. Only a few of the runners appeared energetic at that point in the race. Most looked like refugees running from an invading army. Except my pretty niece, of course, who ran over to the sidelines and hugged me!

All I'm able to pick-up on a scanner is 2 meters/simplex. But I heard you guys radioing each other during the Boilermaker. Wasn't KB2ZNZ from Syracuse net control? Stoney, you're listening to the output of the repeaters on 145.45 from Deerfield and and 146.76 from I'm not sure where, but it seems to have the best coverage of Utica. There are a lot of repeaters in the area you should be able to pick up. The following list is pretty much up to date as far as frequencies, but some call signs have changed: www.qsl.net/ab2qv/cnyham.htmAnd you can listen to repeaters all over the world via Echolink on the Internet. www.echolink.org/(You sign up for it. Licensed hams can transmit, non-hams can listen only. E.g., I can speak into my laptop and broadcast a signal from a repeater anywhere in the world that participates in Echolink. I spoke with a guy carrying a handheld radio while walking his dog on the Isle of Wight in England last year.) We used the Utica Amateur Radio Club callsign, K2IQ, for the race. The net control operator was Bud, W2GLN. Enter call signs into the box at the following to see who they are: www.qrz.comI'm N2CHI .

You might have a point there, Clipper!
Actually, I was further along than mile 9 when I passed out back in 2000. I could actually SEE the finish line, and I was PISSED! I was making really good time...I was set to finish the race in 70 minutes, when all of the sudden I started stumbling around. I hit the ground and the next thing I knew someone was sticking needles in my arm and giving my oxygen. You don't know how pissed off I was. I was so close to a PR. It was my fault, though...I hadn't been drinking enough water because my time was so good and I didn't want to stop. Never made that mistake again!

The repeaters are right up here on Smith hill, just north of where I live. That's why they are the only 2 that come in clearly for me.

I forgot to post that I did in fact see our Governor in the race. It's funny, when I heard that morning he had indeed joined the race, I stood there thinking, "with so many people passing by in semi-bedraggled condition, how will I recognize him." Then it occurred to me to look for a runner with two really big guys close by on either side of him. That's exactly what I saw some time later. No helicopters buzzing overhead, though, or vans full of Secret Service, as you'd see with POTUS. He looked in good shape at the ninth mile and someone later told me he is no slouch as a runner.
