I am pirating a link from Strikeslip's latest Blog in which he links the following article: www.lifeandtimesofutica.com/site/news.cfm?BRD=2681&dept_id=543951&newsid=19827335&PAG=461&rfi=9I just wanted to post to express some relief that somebody out there actually gets it. Unlike other bloggers and "Falsely Concerned" organizations this guy celebrates some of the success that New Hartford schools have had. It is nice to finally see something even slightly positive written about your local schools when all that seems to be out there lately is horrendous negativity. With that said, I would venture to say that the success New Hartford students are having has as much to do with "home" factors as it does with "school" factors. Schools have come a long was in almost every community to try and foster greater student success. It is now time to focus on the other part of the equation and start fixing parents. Maybe if more parents in every community took a page from some of our recent local immigrants and emphasized hard work, discipline, patriotism and respect as opposed to the virtue of sitting on your butt asking for a handout we would see an even more dramatic improvement in our students. This is a start: www.lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080625/OPINION/806250313/1015/OPINION01but needs to be followed up with some drastic changes in parenting.

Man, that above reads like it fell out of Joe Bottini's mouth. That you, Joe?

It's not Mr. Bottini's writing style.

OK, I suppose this is off topic, but the most welcome part of the news article was the fact that the statistics were given by race. I'm tired of seeing statistics where races are lumped together for data that is worlds apart when race is taken into account. As an example, some time ago I read that 2 out of 5 (that's 40%) of American adult males have had a serious non-traffic encounter with the police. Guess the question I wanted to ask.
