Genesis Group: Utica, New Hartford will no longer share Fourth of July parade
UTICA — Utica and New Hartford will no longer share one Fourth of July parade this year, according to a news release from The Genesis Group.
The news comes after New Hartford Town Board members raised questions about the town’s holiday celebration plans at a board meeting earlier this week.
The Genesis Group says the parade will now return to its previous route, beginning in front of Our Lady of Lourdes Church on Genesee Street in South Utica and proceeding north to the Memorial Parkway, rather than heading south to the New Hartford Recreation Center as previously announced.
″... Since the Town of New Hartford is still unclear about its plans for fireworks, Genesis will focus its efforts on Utica’s Party in the Park and fireworks on July 4th,” the release states. “The Town of New Hartford can make its decision when they are ready.”
New Hartford and Utica announced plans for a shared parade and other shared services for two Fourth of July Party in the Park events roughly three weeks ago.
That announcement created controversy in the town, however. It caused six members of the town’s volunteer Parks Commission to resign, citing a lack of effective communication between them and town officials.
At Wednesday’s Town Board meeting, two town councilmen also raised questions about the proposed party and fireworks at Sherrill Brook Park, especially the cost of the event and a proposal from The Genesis Group that mentioned serving alcohol in the park. First Ward Councilman James Messa went as far as to say he would not vote in favor of the event if The Genesis Group remained involved.
On Thursday, The Genesis Group Executive Director Raymond Durso Jr. said that proposal was written based on how Utica organizes its annual party, and was not meant to be a final contract. On Friday, he left open the possibility of working with the town in the future, but said the timing involved would no longer work for sharing Fourth of July festivities.
“When I heard that New Hartford was thinking of bringing back fireworks, I thought it might be a good idea for the City of Utica and the Town of New Hartford to work together and do something nice for all area residents,” Durso said in the release. “As an organizer, we are running out of time to make commitments and need to move forward.”
Utica’s parade will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 4, with the Party in F.T. Proctor Park to follow at 6 p.m.
