I never met a PILOT deal I liked. As a taxpayer, I essentially foot the bill to bring in a company that will provide often low paying jobs whose workers will need further assistance from the public till. The increase in sales taxes from hotel/retail company's presence may only barely cover the increased cost of services needed to host the company. Finally, late last year, someone began to look at the millions of wasted taxpayer money involved in the Empire Zones. But a lot of my money went down the toilet into others' pockets before the barn door was closed. (I love mixed metaphors!)

I was appalled to read about the deal given to the Sheraton(Radisson) Only Eddie Hanna would give a developer 35 years on a tax deal. . I now have a minimal amount of sympathy building for the Hotel Utica developers, but it is very very minimal.
We don't need to rework the Hotel Utica tax deal. We just need to learn from the Sheraton deal, and make sure no more of our money is pissed away, supporting such a vibrant and successful place as the Radisson Hotel and the restaurants and bars within the complex.
As far as a parking garage for the Hotel Utica. It had one and they tore it down. Why?? Who knows. Yes, it should have a garage. It could be a joint venture, with several funding sources. The city is looking for build a parking garage anyhow. OH I forgot. It is too far for the people at the courthouse to walk, and that is the only place downtown, that anyone goes any more.
Gee, maybe there should be a deal, that allowed Hotel Utica to valet park guests cars in the existing garages. Hmmmm. We gave the Hotel Utica other donations of my money, why not give them some free parking too.
I just want to emphatically state. WE do not need to give the Hotel Utica any better deal than they already have, and we damned sure don't need to commit to something as ridiculous as a 35 year tax plan. If it can't make it in ten, it won't make it in 35.

Hey, here's an idea, Clipper. Why doesn't the city of Utica have a program for ex-patriots? Come home to Utica and start paying sales taxes to Oneida county and you won't have to pay any property taxes for ten years!

www.uticaod.com/homepage/x390610241/Radisson-site-might-be-state-land.....And another wrinkle I hadn't heard of. Just watch, as soon as the 35 year agreement runs out the Radisson property will become toxic. With the mindset that businesses have that deal with NYS the only way to occupy that land will be another lifetime deal. We've got to find people to run NOW! There really isn't any time left. We need to start recruiting good people at the local, county and state level to do whats right, not what feels good.
