Syracuse, N.Y. -- The big winter-in-the-fall storm has wound down across Upstate New York, and it left behind some impressive snow totals.
Out of 379 sites that reported snowfall measurements to the National Weather Service, 56 of them had at least a foot. In all, a foot of snow fell in at least parts of 18 counties, stretching from the edge of Lake Erie to the Hudson River, from the Southern Tier to the Adirondacks.
Tied for the top spot with 15.5 inches were Wallace, in the Finger Lakes county of Steuben; and Warsaw, in the Western New York county of Wyoming.
To illustrate how widespread the heavy snow was, each of these counties had a foot of snow in at least one location: Allegany, Cayuga, Chemung, Clinton, Dutchess, Essex, Franklin, Lewis, Livingston, Monroe, Onondaga, Ontario, Oswego, Steuben, Ulster, Wayne, Wyoming and Yates.
The totals could have been even higher if temperatures had been a bit colder; instead, some sleet and freezing rain mixed in, which didn't make shoveling any easier but did reduce snowfall amounts.
