Yogurt?

I'm just wondering how many people like yogurt. I used to hate the thought of it for many years, but once someone got me to tried it without pre-thinking what it should taste like, I really liked it. I now make my own and often have it with honey on top, or with a scoop of jam stirred in. I also make a middle-eastern yogurt cheese (called labani, labany, labneh, or some other close variation) to have as a dip with pieces of pita bread.
I've been thinking about using yogurt as a base for making a dipping sauce for veggies or chips, or as a dressing for various cold pasta salads. I'm already familiar with Tzatziki but am looking for other ideas.
My question is... does anyone have a recipe for an existing yogurt sauce or dressing, or can anyone come up with a few ideas for me to try?

You aroused my curiosity and sent me browsing. We normally have made veggie dips with sour cream or ranch dressing as a base. Found this Oikos recipe that sounds pretty good, and if you can make crab dip with yogurt and cream cheese, why not other flavored dips and why not with your yogurt based cheese instead of the cream cheese. www.oikosyogurt.com/greek-yogurt-recipes/dips/crab-dip/One of my favorite dips for veggies has always been Good Seasons Italian salad dressing mix, whipped into sour cream. Here is one from the Oikos site that sounds quite good. Sort of like a yogurt based guacamole. Just use more than the recommended amount of avocado and seasonings in order to thicken it to a dip like consistency. www.oikosyogurt.com/greek-yogurt-recipes/sauces-dressing/creamy-avocado-yogurt-dressing/ Oh sure! Look what you have done. Now I will have to buy Oikos yogurt, crab meat, and cream cheese and make the crab dip. We have had a crab dip as well as a spinach and artichoke dip with the store bought pita chips. The only yogurt I have ever had a taste for was the flavored little cups that they say are not all that nutritious or good for you. Time to step out and check out the real thing. Is this recipe anything like the cheese that you make? www.allrecipes.com/recipe/83303/labneh-lebanese-cream-cheese/Kathy likes cream cheese on bagels. Maybe she would like to take a crack at making some of this stuff.

I use only Greek yogurt which is fat free and less than 6 grams sugar even though it is lactose. Never buy any type of yogurt that comes with all that fruit spread in it way to high in sugar and you can basically eat a candy bar instead.
I use this for salad dressing and a dip for veggies and marinade . It is simple and you can add different spices fresh or dried to change it up.
Greek Yogurt Dressing
1 cup yogurt 2 TBS olive oil I lemon squeezed for the juice use more or less 1 clove garlic salt, pepper
Taste it you can thin it with more lemon juice or water
To the above depending my needs i use Dill or oregano or mint or whatever experiment on it.

I use Cabot ( when I can find the plain no fat) or Great Value and another one I forgot the name. My lunch every day is 2 small containers plain fat free Greek yogurt, 1 plum or pear and one stick string mozzarella cheese. It is the most affordable for me. I do not eat any lunch meats or preserved anything. Sunday lunch I always have sliced roasted red peppers marinated in olive oil and garlic oil, 1 small container of same yogurt and cheese string. Basic, simple and easy clean up.

I have gotten away from all the flavored and sweetened yogurt, just not to my taste anymore. Sometimes I will breakfast on plain, full fat Greek yogurt with chopped nuts and berries mixed in and sprinkled with cinnamon.

I saw an employee at the little Amish store we went to over the weekend eating an Oikos yogurt in one of those flip things with the crunchy granola looking stuff that you mix in. He was on break around the corner of the store near where we parked. It looked quite good. I may have to try that also.

We usually have several in the fridge. There are a lot worse things they could have for an after school snack.

I bought one. I will wash it down with my free Zero Water that was the "Friday Freebie" at Krogers. Nothing like spending half the day running around like a chicken with it's head cut off. I went to Food City for MY prescription, then to CVS for Kathy's prescriptions, stopped at the dentist's office and made an appointment to have my teeth cleaned while I was in that neighborhood, to Kroger's for some groceries that were on a coupon special as well as some bread, to the dollar store for Brillo pads, and finally the dreaded trip to Walmart for my mini coffee filters for the Keurig. (Did I ever mention how much I hate that place? LOL ) Stopped for gas for the lawn tractor, and finally back home. I may have to take a short Siesta, haha.

Wow Clipper that's a full day. I went to get my sleeping medicine filled BUT the insurance needs a prior from the Doctor because I take it every night and its a year now. Walmart sent a fax and I waited two hours but nope had to come home and call my Doctor which took several calls since no one answered the phone. Well like they say you have to wait 24 hours for the Doctor to respond. Sooo I will not be sleeping tonight. No lunch today no money or rather just enough to pay for medication. I hope the June 1st gets here fast. Ha Ha Ha.

I ate my Oikos Mix last night. It was the vanilla with honey roasted almond and granola variety. I was not terribly impressed with it. While I have eaten granola bars over the years, I still find the texture of loose granola to be similar to dairy feed. Just not appealing to me. I may try the crab dip recipe at some point, but I think it is quite clear to me that I am just not a big yogurt fan.
I sympathize with your medicine vs food situation PB. It is sad when a person works all of their life, only to find themselves in poor health in need of expensive medications, and financially challenged as they reach that point in their life where they have moved from "middle age" to "elderly". I consider myself very fortunate. I have no insurance that covers prescription medications, but thankfully I am still able to afford the cost at this point. I just have to shop around at several places to get the best price on each individual medication. It IS a significant item in my budget but manageable thus far.
When I volunteered at the food pantry I remember one older man in particular whose income was above the poverty line, but he had so many medical issues with MS that he couldn't pay for his home healthcare and medication and still have enough to buy groceries. He didn't come on a regular basis, but the food bank did give him some help with food when his medication and unexpected medical costs left him in a situation similar to your present predicament, having to choose between his medicine and groceries. They DO help when a crisis of any sort arises. Don't go hungry PB, even if you have to swallow your pride and go Mother Marianne's kitchen in West Utica. It is not safe for you not to eat when you are taking many medications. I wish I was there. At least I could take you shopping for enough groceries to carry you through until the first of the month.

Clipper...yes, the recipe from allrecipes.com is much like how I make yogurt cheese except that I don't use cheesecloth. I use a large white man's handkerchief that I've washed by hand in plain hot water (no soap or fabric softener) and rinsed well. I use it over and over. After lining the colander with it and adding the yogurt, I pull-up the corners and tie it in a bundle with string and hang it up to drip into a bowl for a few hours. The longer it drips, the thicker the labani will be. The yellowish liquid that drips out is whey, and it's very nutritious, so I keep it. I'm still looking for ways to use it in preparing other dishes.
Because I like to work in the kitchen, and because I like to save money, I make my own yogurt. It can be with skim, 1%, 2%, or whole milk (as well as milk from animals other than cows). Whatever floats your boat. The process takes a little time to set up, but once done, the yogurt grows itself while I'm off doing something else.

I also make my own Gyros with beef instead of lamb*. The sauce I make is called Tzatziki and I make it with labani, finely chopped cucumber and minced garlic. Mix it up and slather it on the gyro just before you roll it up. It's delicious.
* I make a seasoning mix to add to the ground beef to make gyros. If anyone would like the ingredients and amounts, I'd be happy to post it.

" The yellowish liquid that drips out is whey, and it's very nutritious, so I keep it. I'm still looking for ways to use it in preparing other dishes." You may have to buy a tuffet Kit so you can sit outside on nice days and eat curds and whey.

The Walmart in North Utica hired this young kid as greeter/security. Now they do both jobs. I guess to justify $10./hour. Anyway he is annoying as hell. He yells out this WELCOME TO WALMART, HAVE A GREAT DAY, THANK YOU FOR SHOPPING, COME BACK AGAIN. I soon expect him to start shaking everyone's hand.
