For the postal exam there is a 5 point preference for being a war time (or police action time) veteran and a ten point bonus for things like having a service related disability or being awarded a Purple Heart.
However you must first obtain a passing score on the exam, the preference points then move the you up on the list.

the vets points are the only extras theoretically if you scored a hundred the vets points would get you 105 or 110 clarence is right when he says it only moves you up the list however cs tests are zone scored not raw scored previously how fast you passed the exame also determined ranking on the list and there used to be several tie breakers however now if you have say a 100 people pass the test every body with the same scores in a zone which are usually five point increments gets to be ranked in the same position on the list.. so for example instead of picking one out of 3 high scorers you have the abilty to pick from say 25 people who may have gotten 100 etc all the way down the line. as for the veterans points either 5 or 10 its a once in a life time use they can only be used on one civil service list and never again once you request to use them so basically if you were a vet you had to choose wisely as to what test you wanted them applied to, and im relatively certain that rule has never changed.
