When they close the subways and pull the buses off the streets in NYC, they are taking the threat very seriously. If I lived in a basement apartment in NYC, I would buy a snorkel and swim fins along with the usual bread, milk, and a flashlight. Should the subway tunnels flood, the long term effects on everyday life in the city will be horrible. Among other concerns, there are folks whose living depends on businesses that are located in the subway stations. In many places there are shops, food courts and other businesses several levels below street level that would be destroyed or severely damaged by flood waters.

With so many impacted and with the failure of the electrical grid this should move up to the election. Wonder what would happen if milions of people could not vote on Nov 6

Con Ed's electrical system is in underground tunnels and vaults also. Unless they kill the power BEFORE the water gets in them, I have to think that there will be some serious fireworks.

I remember reading that a major part of the official disaster plan for New York involves evacuating Manhattan by subway. How is that supposed to work?

I remember reading that a major part of the official disaster plan for New York involves evacuating Manhattan by subway. How is that supposed to work? Actually, that sounds like a good plan, because it will get people out early. Most residents of Manhattan do not have cars and most know the subway system very well. When you tell them to evacuate by subway on days x and y, because it isn't going to be running on day z, they have to leave on the city's schedule instead of their own. And there probably isn't any other way to evacuate manhattan, except walk. (Some did on 9/11/2001.) I don't think there are enough buses.

I wouldn't want to be living on the 10th or 12th floor of the projects or even higher in some of the high rises when the power goes off and the elevators cease to operate. That penthouse apartment in the sky might not be so luxurious and comfortable with the winds lashing at the windows and the building moving a couple of feet back and forth. Is a blown over potted artificial ficus tree considered a downed tree for homeowner insurance claim purposes?

Did you see on TWC the shot that was taken at the high rise still under construction. Well the crane fell off and is hanging off the side of the building some 20 stories up. I looks like the subway tunnels being flooded is now a given that electrical grid will be something else to fix.
The crane is now in a dangerous situation. 57th street. Asking people to evacuate who are in high rises.

I hope they sandbagged Jersey Mike's Submarine Sandwich Shop in Point Pleasant. It is the original one that spawned a chain of many reaching all the way down her into the Southeast. That place is a popular landmark that I patronized for many years around NJ, and still patronize here in Bristol. Al will probably be ready for a large Italian Cold Cut with all the goodies when he gets a break. That is one bad ass wind if it can blow Al Roker away, LOL. I better carry my fat ass up there and hold him down.

We have first trees down in Cortland. I see snow in the range of 2' coming to Virginia? and 25' waves off the lake in Chicago... and it has barely begun... Hunker down and stay safe everyone....
