It was a beautiful ceremony. Erin was surrounded by adoring fellow team mates. Thankfully Shani Davis chose to skip the opening ceremonies. The controversy he has generated was not able to dull the unity and team spirit shown by the smiles on the team's faces during their march into the stadium. I guess he was butt hurt that she was able to tie with him in the voting process for flag bearer and he was not happy with the idea of tossing a coin. Hey dude, if ya don't like the rules, don't come to play. Coin flips have been used many years as a expedient, simple and fair way to decide issues. In my opinion when it comes to an organization as diverse as the Olympics attributing the issue to racial bias and bringing Black History Month into the conversation is divisive, inflammatory, unnecessary, inappropriate, and just plain wrong.
A Fox News editor hit the nail on the head with an op-ed that he later retracted. Fox News published an op-ed by John Moody, executive vice president and executive editor, Wednesday titled “In Olympics, let’s focus on the winner of the race — not the race of the winner,” only to pull the piece under pressure from identity-politics lobbyists and left-leaning media.
Erin is an amazing young lady and an extremely talented and competitive athlete. I can't wait to watch her compete. Every TV in Remsen NY will most likely be tuned in, and local area parties and sports bars will take on the Super Bowl like atmosphere of cheering Erin on. I will be watching. It has been said that the 9th turn on the course is difficult to navigate without hitting the wall coming out of the corner. It will definitely make watching the competition interesting.
