We have lots of gas wells around here, they have been drilling for a century or more. We rarely see the trucks, a occasional 4 wheeler maint guy and all the gas is transported in a pipeline. The new well casings are 4 layers thick and re-enforced bigtime.
Truth is, the dont want any issues, they cant afford mistakes and we need inspectors onsite to make sure they dont make any. Another fact is that over 1/3 of our Power and NG is delivered on a Grid thats owned by a British Company in our state, National Grid.
Weve been selling NY by the Pound for a long time, others see the value in our State that we dont. Look at the Amish and Mennonites, they now own 1/3 of Augusta's farms and lands. The Chinese have been drilling into the Gulf right under our noses from Cuba and were paying Brazil to drill and ship oil to us.
We cant have it both ways, all of us in this state depend on NRG and its a universal BTU measurement that we buy be it Nat Gas, Ethanol or Coal Fired generation. If we dont extract what we have, we will continue to buy it from unethical sources at the expense of more American Lives, Jobs and lost opportunities for our children to stay in New York instead of running away to find a future they can afford!

My concerns are many about this, but the experiences in Pa. in the last year alone are enough to make anyone think twice about drilliing here. The type of drilling previously used in NY was standard straight down; not the horizontal fracturing that will be used from now on. It is the chemicals, the quantity of water required and the quality (totally toxic) of it when it returns from the earth that are so damaging. Please read this, including some of the comments; www.vanityfair.com/business/features/2010/06/fracking-in-pennsylvania-201006 And this one; www.popularmechanics.com/science/energy/coal-oil-gas/pennsylvania-fracking-accident-what-went-wrong-5598621And one more; green.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/08/imagining-a-blur-of-fracking-activity/These are just some random articles I pulled out; Google Dimock, Pa. and fracking and get a taste of the reality right now with the same cast of characters and methods that would be utilized in NY! I can't find the article, but one family has a drilling operation that went in just a few hundred yards from their ranch in the country and has had round the clock noise from drilling and trucks and light that can't be avoided for many many months. Fires, polluted water systems, and leases that promise a percentage but the percentage turns out to be nothing!

Its interesting that just below that article was this one, not connected, hmmm, maybe, maybe not! Emails Show Obama Fundraiser Pushed Solyndra Loan An Energy Department adviser pushed for the loan despite pledging to recuse himself, emails show. Anecdotal and hearsay evidence may lead to discoveries of what you fear but I do know folks who are actually studying the things they are saying arent being studied and so far, none of that is showing up as reliable, no causation has been detected or proven, the newer techniques actually use no toxic Chemicals at all! Others say this is only good for the oil companies, thats BS! Just like the Windmills, property owners like Mrs Moot are earning money that helps pay their bills! A friend of mine who is a painter has been collecting good money every month for 10 years and is renegotiating the deal as we speak. Now Im gonna start Name Tossing, Dr Bruce Selleck, Colgate Geologist, Dean of Faculty and all around real expert on this subject has studied this for decades. I know Bruce, he's nobodies tool or fool and has not only identified all of the issues surrounding Fracking but also has the answers and methods for doing it safely. Its not NPR, CNN or Protesters lingo but if you wish to take a minute and understand what were talking about this is and excellent read! offices.colgate.edu/bselleck/NatGas/chenangogas.pdfNo disrespect meant here but many scientists are actually for Fracking and they have proof not hearsay or freaks of nature to back it up. Dr Selleck isn't a Shill for the Oil Companies, hes a world famous, published and highly respected member of the Scientific Community. I didnt just watch him on TV, read about him in the Newspaper or Phone a friend who cares although all of those are for real, he's a Science Star. I went to his office and said, Bruce, whats up with this Fracking Shit. He took 20 minutes out of his very busy schedule to give me the lowdown. He didn't color it pretty in pink or paint it dark and gloomy. At the end he said, John, there is allot of Gas down there and we can get to it safely if we follow the very researched rules and guidelines that have been proven safe and sustainable. His last statement was, Email the Governor and tell him to start hiring lots of Geologists that are trained and specialize in this so that we can inspect and ensure its done to the standards he and hundreds of others have worked their entire lives to develop. Thats good enough for me!
