Think Bucky Phillips and what a fiasco that manhunt turned into. Can't ever underestimate the man on the run.

You got it Swimmy, even the worst quality Soldier has to qualify in Basic Infantry skills before they go on to AIT. That technically makes them a trained Killer. If I had my choice, Id rather go up against a Thug Spraying Bullets before I thought about chasing a Marksman thats been trained to conserve their Ammo for 1 shot 1 Kill!! JR, I fully understood what you meant but speaking about my own family members where two were in the Air Force, two in the Army and one in the Marines and many other families where family members have served in the military then I feel it's safe to say one never knows what a criminal has been trained in and all should be handled the same. Even a street thug can have military training in his (or her) history.

That's a good point, BZ. Similar to "treat all guns as if they are loaded."

Maybe I just look at it from a different point of view.

I agree BZ, just noting the fact that in the last 15 years, we have added almost half a million combat tested veterans back into the mainstream on the homefront. We haven't had that influx of battle hardened Vets since Nam. With over 100.000 enemy served their final notice via the American Service Member, that means lots of Sharpshooters out their with lots of notches on their Rifles.
Most of the shootings and stabbings in Syracuse are punks that cant shoot straight if their lives depend on it, thats what most of the violent crimes look like nowadays. The shooting in Knoxboro was nothing like that, nor was this manhunt.
That should change their approach a bit and when you know your dealing with a VFW with Mental issues going on, you need to be that much more on the lookout and prepared for the unexpected.

I still believe law enforcement should teach these gangster-wannabes how to shoot. Just think of all the money the taxpayer will save in court cases and in hospital bills for someone just shot in the a** if they knew how to aim, hold a gun and killed each other off. ;D

Crimes involving Ft Drum soldiers definitely seem to have spiked in recent weeks.

Denise, thats a not so abnormal occurrence unfortunately, they return a bit changed from when they left, not always for the better. Many are preparing to leave the service and lets face it, some werent pastors to begin with. A few actually miss the high pressure, danger and power associated with being large and in charge and fill the void with less than honorable time passers. One of the biggest challenges is trying to keep spouses that were cheating while their hero's were gone from getting abused or killed once they find out!
BZ, Im not a huge supporter of the "Old Way" of getting punks off the street, involuntary enlistment in the armed forces but it certainly worked to keep many of them from a continued life of crime. At the very least, they should learn how to use the tools of their trades (Guns) before they start spraying the GP!

JG, there's always some amount of crime in Watertown due to Fort Drum....fights....DWIs. Since I live there, it does seem like a recent spike to me. Just before this kid and his friend got caught at the storage units, another 3 were arrested for robbing a kid of his debit card. Don't know if all of the peccadillos reach Utica news, but there also has been a few other offenses involving soldiers and minors.
For the most part I have found soldiers at Ft Drum to be good, decent people. Always a few bad apples in the bunch. What can you do? Just as many local beauties if not more causing trouble. Just isn't as noticeable!!

Denise, it is not unlike having a college in your town, like me. A few bad apples from HCCC seem to come every semester.
I'd imagine in your case, the recent rise in incidents probably goes hand in hand with returning soldiers from a war somewhere and those having anxiety over having to go.

You also raise a good point as well, Dave. A very good point. And on that, this young soldier who fled, perhaps he is a sure sign of that. Somehow he made it through basic, but only served 3 months in Afganistan. That is a very short tour so it begs the question why. It is possible he is an isolated case, or its possible Dave's thoughts are indicated by this soldier. Definitely a good point, Dave.

I have been told that the bad ones in the units generally hang out together and get in trouble together.
Yes, we do see more nonsense just before and after deployments. This Spring we had 3 winners (from same unit) rob a convenience store while in uniform. They got a couple hundred dollars and some cigarettes. Turns out, they didn't want to deploy.
Hate to say it, jail probably saved their lives.
