Not long ago we were arguing over what constitutes a Hate Crime and was it better these laws were to be enforced by The Though Police or just The Thoughtful Police.
Anyway, many of you may have read of the fight at Sylvan Beach over Memorial Day ...

Or have seen the video of it ....

Or UDN's photo gallery of the fight ....

But back on topic, here is what the Trooper said in response to whether this was a hate crime, since somebody called someone a "faggot." (And I can't tell for sure, but the victim may have been black.)
"“We thought it was going to be a hate crime, but when we interviewed (the suspects), they had no idea the guy was gay -- they used the term loosely. So that negated the whole thing.”
(That is on the perp's say so, we should note.)
"Jones (the victim) is okay, Strickler said, and he did come to the trooper barracks in Sylvan Beach the next day to press charges on his attackers. He’d hoped they would be charged with a hate crime, but police said the investigation proved differently.”
“It started because they were intoxicated – every one of them,” Strickler said. “It was alcohol that fueled that incident.”
So what have we here? A possible Hate Crime that will not be a Hate Crime because the perpetrator says it ain't so. And this is interesting ... becauise of an alternative fuel, alcohol instead of hate.
Whew! I'm glad I'm not a judge!
