When was night shift supervisor at PJ Green my whole crew was Russian. My #1 guy had already decided that the was to get ahead in the US was to learn Englsh. He made every break & lunch an English lesson.
He tried to reciprocate by teaching me Russian, but that didn't go nearly as well. However, something that involved wordplay or puns would obviously stick with me.

"My #1 guy had already decided that the was to get ahead in the US was to learn English", smart guy. Yet we still continue to believe that English as a second language is a good option for Immigrants.

It's too bad that some days I can't type.
He was smart. When he first arrived here his English was sub-standard but he became the best in the crew. As I wrote, he was determined to advance himself. He learned how to set up and trouble shoot every machine in the plant and also to use our computerized stock pull & inventory system.
Just over a year later when I transferred to day shift, he became my replacement as 2nd shift supervisor.
The last I heard, he bought a fixer-upper, fixed it during the days while still working nights. Then he sold it at a profit & moved out of the area for a better job opportunity. Good for him, a loss for us.

If I landed in Russia, I'd appreciate a little Russian instruction in English to begin. (Russian as a Second Language.) Most ESL models end when a basic understanding of English is attained. As such it provides for a faster learning of the new language and everyone benefits from that. ESL can reduce a dependence on the old language that has been known to foster more separatism from the general society. It's a good integration tool when implemented well in the schools.

Valid point Dave, I remember doing service calls in Utica in the 80's, Old Italian Gents who didn't speak a lick of English and lived here 50 years or more were very common then.
Bilingual works well if you have a predominant base of Immigrants in your area. Here as an international resettlement Zone, we get people from all over the world. We don't have a Border with non English speaking residents pouring over to become citizens. I don't think its reasonable to believe schools could serve as translators for the 15 languages that end up in Utica.

I have a friend who was a principal there, I should ask her. They must do something with each of the languages in order to at least communicate with the kids.

Multi-lingual healthcare is also a challenge.

Truthfully the challenge of getting to America from other than Mexico and Canada is a tough ride, their live before even tougher. Learning another language is peanuts in comparison.

When will this country realize that English IS it's national language and stop with all this multi-lingual translation stuff? I refuse to shop at Lowes for that reason. I refuse to sift through the Spanish text before getting to the English text on products, aisles names, etc.

Exactly Swimmy. I recently changed banks because the default on their ATM's was Spanish, not English. Nothing wrong with helping people learn English but when they default the other way I am voting with my wallet and my feet.
This language thing is a huge expense to the taxpayer too. I just heard they have agreed to pay the language interpreters in court $125.00 per hour, start adding that up along with the cost of medical interpreters and you have one of the biggest scams going. My understanding is the court appointed attorneys only get $75.00 per hour but the interpreters charge $125.00? who the hell negotiated that? Often the medical interpreter gets more than the doctor does for a medicaid patient.

Since when do we cater to those who come to the USA and change things for them. Our grandparents weren't given that benefit. What makes these new immigrants so special? It's a big slap in the faces of those who came here years ago and worked hard to become "Americans" and were willing to learn our ways. It really is getting sickening. The other day we pick up a new phone and couldn't find the English instructions through the Spanish, French, and even Chinese. There have been many petitions sent to our legislators demanding we adopt English as our only language and all have been totally ignored. When are we all gonna take a stand to end this bull sh*t because that is what it has become.

Its been proven over the last two centuries, those that assimilated and became American, not just American's have succeeded ten fold over those that brought the old country with them to live in here. Teaching legal immigrants English, Customs and Courtesies should be our number one priority, then formal education being able to understand what is being taught.
Illegal Aliens are a whole 'nother topic, don't get me started on that...

I personally don't cater to them because I can't speak Spanish. But I guess Lowe's figures that in a competitive environment if they don't put up Spanish signs and Home Depot does, they'll lose business. Unless they all agreed not to .... language fixing! A new federal crime and we can have a whole department of 10,000 new federal employees to work on this! Once New York State hears about it, they'll want to hire at least 5,000, maybe more.
My opinion is this is America and anybody who wants to can damn well come here. As long as they work and support themselves. That's how my family got here. If that means 50 years go by and America becomes 75% Latino, so be it. It could be pasty white for only so long. Besides, it is the countries with open borders and open economies who will flourish in the future. And I don't hold English sacred, either. Hasta la vista, baby! (From our German governor of California.)
