Have you heard about this one? Gov. Spitzer wants to add a $15 fee to automobile insurance policies. The money would be used (supposedly) for road and bridge repair. Heard it on the news yesterday. Was glad the windows were rolled up, else the guy three lanes over would have heard me cussing.

You mean on top of the $5 per car per year we are already paying on our insurance bill? Something called Motor Vehicle Law Enforcement Fee?
Just one more way to further tax NYer's to death.

How about paying the surcharge for throwing out your old tires when you buy them and when you buy a new vehicle?

Just wait. When everything is out for everyone to see you are going to be astounded. New Yorkers are just getting FEE'D to death. Pataki did it and now Spitzer is. Just the 'norm' in Albany.

I got an Idea- get rid of welfare- that will cut the budget in Half. (Well maybe not get rid of it completely but you get the point)

They did get rid of Welfare ... sort of. If I remember correctly ... experts, please step in here ... a few years ago, the feds said they wouldn't pay for anyone on state or local welfare beyond 3 years, I think. However, some states (all?), but including New York, have their own law that says you can't let people go hungry. However....and I'm not sure how this all worked out, but I'm told that welfare rolls in NY state were cut prodigiously. Your taxes didn't go down because your representatives found other uses for the money. Comments?

You know, if the elected officials of this state all agreed that for one year...... ONE YEAR...... to get rid of ALL pork the deficit would almost be eradicated. Can you imagine that! Just one stinkin year. Leave all the taxes the same, leave all the other expenditures the same but for ONE YEAR cut all the pork. I KNOW I KNOW what people will be saying.. if you can do it for one year then you can do again next year. But that doesn't have to be the case. If they would step back and look at the way New York has become an economic cesspool then they might gather that this could work. Just one year!

Personally I would love to see the budget if New York City Succeeded From New York State.

Rrogers40, best suggestion I've heard in a long time. Totally agree with you on that. They keep this up and I'll be pedaling my bike back n forth to Utica.

I notice my insurance went up when my renewal came last month.
I called about it as I was worried maybe I had done something wrong. I was told that it was just because of the claims and cost of doing business.
The rates didn't go up in all the states, just the ones with substantial claims and high business costs.

The Wall Street Journal printed a report recently that predicted many customers are going to be getting nasty surprises the next time renewals come around. After several years of battling for market share against discounters like Geico and Progressive, insurance companies have decided it's time now to make some profits. Allstate and Progressive are a little ahead of the curve in higher rates but others will follow in this normal business cycle.
"cost of doing business" translates to "higher profits" in English.

Well my carrier is Geico. I was very surprised at the raise which was almost $6.00 per month.
I can only imagine what some others may equate to.
