I've been getting several promos from "Avast" as routine scanning software for the current discounted price of $19.95 per year. I'm wondering if it's a reliable and useful tool and worth the money. Does anyone have experience with it, and is it really good? I've been using CCleaner and SuperAntiSpyware, both free editions, and they seem to work, but I'm not a techie and need some guidance. Am I okay with what I've been using or is Avast really better?

I think Ralph may have used Avast. I use it on my laptop. I haven't had any problems with it. I still use Norton on my desktop and recently installed Ccleaner on the advice of some of our members. I guess I am of the mindset that unless I am having a problem with what I have, I am not in the market to jump on promos. I have used Avast, AVG, McAfee, and program called Security Suite that I bought from Walmart years ago. I had problems with McAfee and Security Suite was junk. Avast has been reliable and effective for me on my laptop, and for 20 bucks it's probably a bargain, but if what you have is working and problem-free I would not be in a rush to change. Norton has done well for me, but I pay a significant price for it also. I just have it on auto-pay so I never have to worry about it expiring and leaving me vulnerable.
Ralph or CB can probably speak to your concerns with a more educated an experienced input.

I have only used the free version. If you go to the Avast site you can see the extras included in the deluxe version. I suspect that after the initial year the price will change to $69.95 per year.

We've been using Avast (free version) for years with no problems on all five of our computers. We also use the CCleaner every day when we log off one of them as well as Malwarebytes to scan once every week or so, all free versions. It's important top note that the only one that loads during start-up and runs in real time is Avast. CCleaner and Malwarebytes are used as needed and then we exit out of them, neither runs in the background. Both Windows 7 & 10 have had their own AV software that runs as well and seems to be doing a fine job.
We have been running like this for well over 10 years with no problems. But we don't read our emails online, they are filtered through Earthlink Webmail and downloaded to Outlook on our PC's where it is again filtered. If it looks fishy, it doesn't get opened. If you are ordering products online, or accessing anything to do with your bank account or debit/credit cards, etc. it is advisable when you are done to close out your browser and run CCleaner to wipe your cookies and clean anything from your PC's clipboard.

I do what Ralph does. When I decided to use my Bank online to check balance the Bank I deal with sent me a program to use when dealing with their Bank called Trusteer Endpoint Protection. I also found out it slowed down my laptop so I disabled it and run it only when dealing with my Bank or credit card company then disable it again. Huge difference in speed was noticed.

Thank you everyone for your input. My computer (ASUS laptop) has some problems but I don't think Avast will solve them. I think the computer is full of s... and needs a good enema. Now, to find someone who can do that...

Yep. I followed the advice given to you and downloaded the Ccleaner. It helped a lot, but I still have issues. I wonder if it would help if I mixed up some Miralax and squirted into one of the USB plugs with a syringe. I am still inclined to replace my desktop, but I will have to wait a month or so for Santa and see if he brings me a new one. I can't afford to go out and buy one until after Christmas. This coming month I have to invest 8 or 9 hundred dollars in 4 new tires for the truck. Every model year they make the wheel size bigger on new trucks and with every bigger wheel replacement tires become much more expensive. My truck has 20-inch wheels. This truck only has 40K miles on it or I would contemplate trading.

I think a 'clean install' will be necessary to restore my computer to the way it was when I bought it. A drastic step for a techno-dummy like me, but oh well...

I had a fairly weird computer experience this morning. When I first booted up I decided to click on the sign on picture just to see where it was taken. Normally that opens Edge and has a little story about when and where the picture was taken. Today it triggered a long reboot. When I did get on half of the short cuts on my home screen were missing. I opened Chrome and all of my bookmarks were missing. Tried to go here and Pro Boards had also forgotten me. Had to look up my password in order to sign in. Too much brain work for an old guy.

Looks like I'm not the only one with tech issues. This morning on my desktop when I tried to access a few websites I got an error message saying "DNS Server Cannot Be Found". I ran windows diagnostics which was a waste of time. I finally gave up. A couple hours later it's back to normal. Beats me.

One of the quickest ways to sort out a problem is to just reboot your PC. Many times this will sort out whatever is happening to drive you nuts. Sometimes when the programs load at startup, things just don't mesh as they should and all Hell breaks loose. lol! Just turn it off and on again and usually all is well afterwards.
