I find it sad that one group can bring about a boycott effective enough to force the closing of a family restaurant, founded on Christian family values. Chick-Fil-A is constantly a target for progressive groups to boycott. Chick-fil-a is founded and owned by a Southern Baptist Family who believes in living a life based on Scripture and Christian values. There is a Chick-fil-a on every other corner here in the South. They are very successful and popular here in the bible belt. Their food is actually quite good. Here in the South there are two groups of Christians. Those who believe in live and let live, leaving judgment to the Lord, and those less tolerant and more judgemental and outspoken in their objection to what they would call an alternative lifestyle that goes against their interpretation of scripture, and their beliefs. Sadly some family representatives of the owner family have spoken out loudly with their opinions concerning the gay lifestyle. They, however, have not to my knowledge, discriminated in their business, or refused to serve a gay person. They probably would be in court however if they were asked to cater a same-sex wedding reception. I am relatively sure that they might draw a line at that point.
I read an article on the 98.7 radio web page the other day where there were rumors that a Chick-fil-a might be built in New Hartford. There was a large number of negative comments on the subject by people objecting to the possibility of one being built on the Seneca Turnpike. Comments based on the fact that the owners of Chick-fil-a do not believe in mixed marriage and don't support the LGBTQ community. The Utica area touts a reputation for being a harmonious blend of religious and mixed ethnicity. The area has a blended religious community of Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Muslims, and others. I find it surprising that an area that hosts every religion under the sun living there, including Muslims who believe that homosexuals should be killed, would lack tolerance for a Christian family-owned business. I wonder if they have ever given any thought to boycotting KFC. I would hazard a guess that as an old fashioned southern gentleman, Colonel Sanders was probably both a racist as well as a homophobe, yet they flock to the drive-thru for buckets of chicken.
Chick-fil-a's owners may express their religious beliefs, but they don't discriminate in hiring or in customer service. I met my brother and sister for lunch not long ago and the counter person at the Chic-fil-a where we ate was obviously gay. He could not have more proudly flaunted it if he tattooed a rainbow flag on his forehead. He took our order without discriminating against that fat, bald-headed, straight white guy. I don't patronize fast food places often, but I find Chik-fil-a to always have clean restaurants friendly staff, and hot, fresh food.
It is sad that a group that objects to the business can't just boycott the restaurant themselves, without mounting a mean spirited campaign to drive the restaurant out of business despite the fact that there are others who enjoy patronizing the business.
